I’ve always been a huge fan of backdated early 911s.  I even have one of my own.  They give you the great looks of the classic Early 911 with a better chassis and equipment.  In my opinion, they make one of the best Porsches for touring and performance events.  The key to building a great “back-dated” 911 is to start off with a great, low-mile example.

This 911’s was one of the very last off the assembly line before Porsche transitioned to the 911 SC.  It was built in June of 1977 and delivered later that summer to an Air Force Pilot in San Diego, CA.  By the late 80’s, this 911 only had around 35,000 miles on it when this owner decided to update it to a more modern looking Porsche.  So, he hired the best in the area: Andial.  Andial did a very high level conversion of the car including installing factory steel RS flares (not Carrera flares) as well as a brand new 1986 911 Carrera crate motor from the factory, which was EPA certified (see photo).  The car stayed with the family (later given to his son) until 2007 when it was sold to a gentleman in the Santa Barbara area with only 62k original total miles.

This owner kept the car for about 5,000 miles/7-years before selling it in 2014 to a nearby 911 enthusiast who had plans to give the car a makeover and a more sport-purpose vibe.  He stripped the car down and repainted it Grand Prix White lacquer over an off-white primer.  The end result is a much softer hue of GP white.  It almost looks like Porsche’s Light Ivory.   When the car was painted, there were no signs of accidents or rust.  It was a very dry and straight/low-mile example.  The car was finished off as a raw outlaw version of its original self.  Some further highlights of this build included:

Shortly after finishing the project, he sold it to one of my long-time friends and Porsche enthusiasts who really wanted to take this car to the next level.  His goal was to give it a tasteful early RS/ST look but also make it very user friendly and comfortable for long vintage touring events that we do together.  He decided to give the car a backdated look and used steel front fenders, decklid, and the original hood for the job.  The front and rear RS bumpers are new RFP.  Besides backdating the body, the following enhancements were also included:

  • New glass rear quarter windows (pop-out)
  • 15×7 and 15×8 factory Porsche Fuchs
  • Fresh tires
  • RS sport style seats with houndstooth inserts
  • Early style SWB rear view mirror
  • New Porsche chrome side mirrors
  • New chrome door handles (all keyed to ignition key)
  • Died visors and headliner in black
  • New chrome exhaust tip
  • Installed glove box door and ashtray
  • Adjusted/tighted shift linkage
  • Serviced sunroof including new rubber seals, felts, motor, and cables
  • New aluminum door thresholds
  • Hella license plate light
  • Color sanded/polished paint

We had a compression and leakdown test performed prior to selling it a couple of years ago and cylinder 1 was off.  A rag from checking the oil had gotten sucked into the fan and parked itself on top of the #1 cylinder.  So, a complete top-end engine rebuild was performed including all new rings, headwork, and a valve job.  The work was done by Sleepers Speed Shop in Costa Mesa, CA in May of 2016.  The total for this work was over $13k.  So, essentially, the drive train has only a couple thousand miles on it.

The paint looks great with minimal signs of use (less than 8,000 miles since being painted).   The 15×7 and 15×8 Fuchs look great.  They are wearing tires with more than 75% life.  The front brakes have about 75% life and the rears are at about 50% life.

The interior is equally nice.  The seats were installed recently as were the door panels.  The original dash is in excellent condition with no cracks or warping.  The lightweight carpet looks nice with just some minor wear on the driver side by the foot pedals.  The wood footboards are new as well.  All the gauges and lights function properly.  This car is still equipped with both front defrost and heat, the controls of which are cleverly relocated to the hand-brake area to help give the dash a clean/uncluttered finish.

The current owner just had a fresh oil service (using Driven synthetic) and inspection prior to having the car shipped from Anchorage, Alaska to Seattle and then driven to Rennsport Reunion in Monterey.  Afterwards, it was driven down to us in SoCal.  In total, it just drove 1,200 flawless miles without a hiccup.

Weighing only 2,400lbs with approximately 220 fresh horsepower, it is a joy to drive.  Turning is sharp and responsive.  The brakes have excellent bite and a huge improvement from the stock brakes of that time.  The power is strong with great low-end grunt.  This car is incredibly easy and comfortable to drive long distances while still providing plenty of fun in the twisty bits.  Really, it is the perfect car for all the different vintage tours that are available.

This 911 does pass California’s strict smog test and has the correct BAR door decal!

It comes with over 10-years of records, space saver spare, original tool kit, jack, and air compressor.
