For 28-months, a Porsche speedometer only went to 85 mph.
From September of 1979 to December of 1981, all Porsches sold new in the U.S. were mandated to have speedometers that only went up to 85mph. No other time in Porsche’s 70+ year history have they had a speedometer that read under 100mph.
The U.S. government thought this would help save fuel. It didn’t. The majority of Americans disregarded the 55mph national speed limit and continued with their speeding habits. Porsche was one of the first companies to switch back to their normal gauge when the law changed. And, they were the first company to offer a regular speedometer retrofit for their customers who had the 85mph one. I can just imagine the “cooler-chat” among Porsche employees mocking the U.S. during that time.
Maybe the speedometer scarred the first owner and that’s why this insanely original 911 SC only has just under 16k miles on it.

Many regard the 911 SC as among the best Porsches ever built. They are simple and pure like the early 911s with extremely reliable aluminum block 3.0-liter motors and rust resistant chassis. These 911s were considered to be the first ones that could easily be used as daily-drivers. This, combined with their robust reliability has led to most SCs having hundreds of thousands of miles on them. It is extremely rare to find such a well-preserved original example that not only looks as good as it did the day it rolled out of Stuttgart, but drives like new as well.
This 911 was built on March 6th, 1981 and delivered new on June 26th, 1981 by Carousel Porsche + Audi of Minneapolis, Minnesota. This SC was ordered with the following factory options:
- Genuine leather front seats
- Heated/power outside mirror, right
- Electric antenna
- Automatic speed control
- Black roofliner
- Spoilers front and rear
- Sport shocks
- Fog lamps
- Engine lid without model designation
- Electric sunroof
The final MSRP was $32,410. That would be over $80,000 in today’s dollars.
The first owner was a Mr. Craig Stout of St. Paul, MN. For the first decade, he drove the car about 1,400-miles per year and serviced it regularly at the selling Porsche dealer. For the next 27-years, he stored the car properly to help preserve it. He kept the car for a total of 27-years before passing it along to his close friend Mr. Kip Campbell with 14,710 miles on June 19th, 2008. Campbell was an active car collector, but did not deal much with Porsches. He only kept the car for a few years and added less than 500-miles. However, he was very thorough with the proper services that were needed based on time. Flat Six, Inc. in Minnesota and the selling dealership did much of the work. This included:
- Regular oil service and inspections
- Brake fluid and gear oil flushes
- Head studs replaced (30 total)
- Oil return tubes
- Oil pressure sender
- Clutch replaced
- Chain tensioner guard set
- Rocker shaft o-rings
- Mainshaft seal
- Fuel pump, filter, and relay
Campbell had Richard Sloan sell the car for him. The current owner purchased the car from Sloan in November of 2011 with 15,307 miles. This owner is no stranger to Porsches as he’s owned many concours low-mile preservation examples over the decades. Although this owner has only added less than 700-miles on the car, he’s been fastidious about his care. Services he’s performed include:
- Michelin TB15 Tires (period correct vintage-style) – purchased new in 2016
- Full alignment and corner balance
- Oil services every 6-months using Motul 300V (last oil service less than 60 days ago)
- New brake lines/brake fluid flush
- Rebuild rear brake caliper
- New master cylinder
The exterior of this SC looks brand new. The paint has a wonderful shine to it as well as being all original and verified with a paint meter (see photos). There are no dents or any major blemishes. The finish is great. All the trim is also in similar original and preserved condition. All the glass is original, in perfect shape and wearing all their correct factory stamps. The 15×7 and 15×8 Fuchs are perfect and wearing their factory finish. They are wrapped in very expensive period correct Michelins with near full tread/less than 500-miles. The brakes have more than half-life remaining. All the exterior lights work properly.
The interior is equally as nice and certainly tells the story of not only a low-mile survivor, but an example that has been properly looked after. The leather seats are perfect with hardly any indentations from use. The carpet, headliner, door panels, and dash all look fresh. All the gauges work properly and there is no fading. The clock also works. The original owner intentionally specified no radio when purchased. So, there are no speakers in the doors, but all the factory wiring for the radio, speakers, and even antenna are still as it left Porsche. Even the original owner’s manuals look like they have barely been opened.
Of course, the best part about this SC is the way it drives. There is something special about low mile preservation cars. Everything feels tight and crisp. It’s about as close as you can get to driving this Porsche new back in the early 1980’s. It starts easily and holds a smooth idle. There’s no smoking or hesitation. The throttle response is quick and it easily rips through the rev range. The transmission shifts easily with no grinding or slipping. The brakes have a wonderful confidence inspiring bite with no fading or pulling. The car tracks straight down the road and the Michelin TB15s have tremendous grip. Turn in is light and razor sharp. This SC could easily compete at a national level preservation concours event or simply be used for light weekend cruising/touring.
Although the car is currently registered in Washington State, it has been recently registered in CA and passed the emissions test. The car is located here in Southern California.
This SC comes very complete with the original owner’s manual, factory maintenance book, extra keys (3 total), space saver spare, jack, factory tool kit, tire compressor, original window sticker, original sales brochures, and many service records.
