Automotive journalists have touted the Porsche 996 Turbo as one of the most drivable super cars on the road.  The performance numbers on these cars are incredible.  Yet, their ease of use made them great daily driver options.  These Turbos were the first U.S. market water cooled cars to get the famed “Mezger Motor.”  Hans Mezger designed the GT1 LeMans winning motors, which continued to develop and find their way into Porsche’s flagship 911 offerings for well over a decade.  Talking with countless Porsche mechanics, they all agree that these Turbos are among the most reliable that Porsche ever built.

This Turbo was built in September of 2000 and was delivered new on October 4th, 2000 by Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas, Nevada.  Although these Turbos came with many standard features that were typical options on the lower models, this one was equipped with the following additional factory options:

  • Wheel caps with colored crests
  • Lumbar support -right seat
  • Digital sound package
  • Remote CD changer
  • Supple leather front and rear seats
  • Black floor mats – Porsche lettering
  • Porsche crest in headrests

The total MSRP was $114,810

The first owner lived in Southern California and serviced the car at McKenna Porsche.  Highlights of this owner’s services include:

  • Routine/annual oil changes
  • Engine replaced in 2002 @ 6k-miles under warranty
  • Crankshaft oil seals replaced
  • Cooling system serviced/flushed
  • Brake fluid flushes

This owner sold the car to the current local SoCal enthusiast on May 5th, 2004 with 15,600-miles.  For the last 14-years/12k-miles, this owner has used the car sparingly for weekend cruising.  Although he used it less than 1,000-miles/year, he was on top of services.  He continued the regiment of annual oil changes regardless of miles.  Most of the services were performed by either Glenn Yee Motorsports in San Dimas, CA or Loren Beggs of 911 Design in Montclair, CA. Highlights of services include:

As you can imagine, this Turbo is absolutely magnificent.  The color is one of my favorites and very hard to capture on camera.  It is more of a dark charcoal that changes in different light (see pics).  It is much rarer than the common Basalt Black or flat Black.  The exterior shows minimal signs of use.  Just a few minor nicks that have been professionally touched up.  The front bumper has a few slight superficial cracks by the nose (see pic).  The rest of the paint has been checked with a paint meter and appears to be original with the exception of the hood, which we believe was repainted at the factory.  The HRE wheels were an $8k upgrade at the time (original wheels are no longer available).  They have no curb rash or major blemishes and are wearing older Michelin Pilot Sport tires that have about half-life remaining and no cracks.  The front brakes have about 35% life left and the rear brakes are at about 75%-life.  The glass is all original including the windshield.  There were a couple miniscule chips that were professionally filled and hardly noticeable.

The interior is equally clean.  The supple leather front seats have no tears or major cracks and just some slight exit bolster wear.  The rear seats, carpet, headliner, and door panels are near perfect condition.  The dash has no cracks or signs of warping.  All the gauges and buttons function properly including the original radio.  The A/C system blows very cold.

This is one of the freshest 996 Turbos I’ve seen.  It is clear that it was well loved and appreciated by both of its owners.

This Porsche starts easily on the first try and holds an even idle.  The power is strong and as I’ve told many owners, these Turbos don’t really need the countless engine mods that most people install.  Shifting is incredibly smooth and precise with no grinding or slipping.  The clutch feels fresh.  The brakes have incredibly bite with no fading.  The car drives straight and the Euro-style suspension nicely absorbs the bumps but also provides an even more planted handling experience.  Although this example has been relegated to weekend cruising all of its life, it could easily be used daily and would be fantastic for long distant drives/tours.  Everything feels crisp and new.

This Turbo has current California registration that is paid through April of 2020 and it passes CA’s stringent smog test requirements.

This Porsche comes with an extra key, owner’s manuals, original maintenance book, window sticker, most service receipts, car cover, car bra, space saver spare, tool kit, jack, and air compressor.
