In 1970, Porsche introduced the all-new 2.2L engine for its 911 lineup. This unique motor was only offered in 911s for 2 years. Many claimed these were the best air-cooled motors for a production 911. The 2.2L motors were said to be the last ones directly connected to Porsche’s race program. Porsche specialists consider these as true enthusiast cars. In particular, the MFI E and S motors produced a unique signature howl at higher RPMS, creating a cult status among collectors. Afterward, Porsche’s production was limited by costs, government restrictions, and other influences. Experts place an E much closer to the S models. From a performance perspective, they are not much different.
This 911E was built in November of 1969 and sold new by Ogner Porsche + Audi of Canoga Park, California.
The first owner was in Southern California and only kept this 911 for about 18 months and 20k miles. It was traded back into the selling Porsche dealer who then sold it on August 7th, 1971 to Meredith Sessions of Del Mar, California. Ogner Porsche added a Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM radio as well as 14” Fuchs wheels. Meredith and her family kept this 911 for the next 42 years and added 73k more miles.
In 2004/2005, Meredith decided to have her 911E refurbished to look closer to new with a few minor upgrades. She employed a local SoCal shop to do the paint, body, and interior while having Henry Schmidt of Supertec in Fallbrook, CA do the engine rebuild. The refurbishment was completed in August of 2007. The work included the following:
- Disassemble body, remove doors, glass, and trim
- Strip body to bare metal
- Repair any metal work needed
- Refinish in correct factory silver paint
- Replace all rubber seals
- New windshield
- Rechrome bumper guards
- Replace horn grills and exterior light lenses
- Rebuild all brake calipers/new brake components
- Remove engine and disassemble
- Henry Schmidt to do complete engine rebuild
- New chain tensioners
- Powdercoat all engine tins
- Rebuild MFI system
- All new engine seals
- Restore dash
- New headliner
- Rebuild door panel pockets using later style
- Install later inertial reel seat belts
- New larger side mirror
- Repair handbrake light switch
- Restore original flat seats in leather
- Replace any electrical, cables, etc. as needed
During the refurbishment, aluminum 911S front calipers were installed as well as SSI stainless steel heat exchangers with a polished factory aluminum muffler.
After completion, Meredith and her husband only added 1,200 more miles. She passed away in 2011 and a couple of years later, her brothers sold the car to Terry Brewer at TruSpeed in Costa Mesa, California. With the help of lead mechanic Bill Manuel, they performed the following services for the next owner:
- Replace shifter bushings and adjust shifter arm
- Repair door lock tumbler to fit key
- Replace headlight switch and repair wiring
- Replace transmission due to a crack in the case
- Source good 5-speed transmission/transfer case
- New clutch kit
- Main shaft bearing
- Locking plate

- New seals/gaskets
They sold this 911E to the current Orange County owners in March of 2013 with 93,500 miles. For the past dozen years, they have only added a few thousand miles. During their care, they serviced it at Vision Motorsports as well as Aase Motorsports. Services performed include:

The exterior of this 911E looks great and shows minimal signs of wear. The repaint is about 10 years old, but only a couple thousand miles. The repaint was a bare metal/glass and trim out using the correct Glasurit paint. The body gaps are very good and the doors close properly. All the trim is in good shape and the window trim appears to be original. All the exterior lights work. The glass is original except for the windshield, which was replaced during the repaint. There are no major chips or scratches. The original factory 14” Fuchs appear to have their original anodized finish with light signs of age, but nothing significant. They are wearing Michelin tires dated 2006 with 75% tread life remaining. Although the tires have near full tread-life, they should be replaced due to age. The brakes have under half-life life remaining. The front brakes are aluminum 911S calipers.
The interior is very tidy and was refurbished in 2007. The front seats have been restored in leather and have no cracks or tears. The rear seats are original and look unused. The headliner was replaced and has no stains or sagging. The headliner lights do not work. The sun visors have been replaced and look new. The door panels had later door pockets installed. The dash was also replaced and has no cracks or warping issues. All the gauges work, including the clock. The original Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio works. The window winders operate smoothly with minimal effort.
This 911E starts easily and usually on the first try. It holds an even idle and the hand throttle works. The throttle response is excellent and the power delivery is even across the rev range with no hesitation or other issues. The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no slipping or grinding and the clutch engages properly. The brakes have an excellent bite with no fading or pulling. The handling is crisp and responsive with light steering. It would be further improved with new tires. The car tracks straight and is effortless to drive at highway speeds.
Although this car has spent nearly all of its life in California, it’s currently registered in Montana. It is exempt from CA smog.
This 911E includes 3 keys, the original owner’s manual with cover, original dealer bill of sale (from 1971), correct blue CA license plate (just 1) that appears to have been restored at one point, paint restoration photos, original spare wheel/tire, original jack, and complete like-new factory tool kit.
I need a longhood 911 in my life.
It’s been a decade since I’ve owned an early 911 (1965-1973) and I can feel the itch.
Over the past few months, we’ve had five tasty examples come through the Kennel and now that pesky itch has become a burning case of Shingles.
I’ve narrowed down my want to two possibilities:
- Short wheelbase 911 (1965-1968)
- 2L 911E (1970 and 1971)
After enjoying this SoCal example for the past week, I’m leaning towards a 2.2L E like this one.
“The Ed” knows that scheming look of mine and without me saying anything, he blurted his trademark comment, “We’re not running a museum here.”
To me, the line between dealer and museum is blurry.
However, I did promise myself that I would sell two cars before buying another one. Now that the Chevy van is sold, I can almost taste a 911E.
P.S. Anyone want to buy a 1987 Isuzu Impulse RS or 1966 BMW 1600?!
