After driving hundreds of long-hood 911s, my favorites are the ‘’70/’71 model years with the 2.2L engines. There is something special about how this motor revs and its visceral nature. The dog-leg gearbox is perfectly matched to the power. The way the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears form the perfect “V” pattern, makes it a joy to shift. The challenge with these 911s is many of them never survived, let alone remained as original and intact as this survivor.
This Porsche was built in February of 1970, and a new one was ordered for tourist delivery at the factory by Mr. Theodore Heil of Hollywood, California. It was ordered with the following options:
- US equipment
- Bumper horns – front and rear
- 911 S instruments and oil tank
- Antenna – left w/loudspeaker and noise suppression
- Tinted glass all around
- Chrome whole disk wheels (5.5J x 15)
Furthermore, this 911 was also fitted with factory Hella fog lamps, aluminum 911 S front brake calipers and coveted 15×6 “deep 6” Fuchs wheels.
At the end of 1969, Mr. Heil was 49 years old, recently divorced, and ready for an adventure. He got in touch with Porsche N.A. and ordered this 911 T for European delivery. He arrived at the factory in February of 1970 with his best friend to see his car being completed. For the next several months, they had an extended vacation throughout Europe in this bright yellow 911. When they finished the trip, the 911 was loaded onto a cruise ship and they all journeyed back across the ocean together. Each day, he would go down into the hold to make sure everything was ok.
Shortly after arriving back in Southern California, he met his soon-to-be wife and together they traveled all over California in this 911 to attend a variety of PCA (Porsche Club of America) events. Soon after, their family grew with the addition of 3 children. As a result, Mr. Heil spent less and less time with his 911. By the early 1980s, he decided to put the car away for long-term storage in his garage. He cleaned the car, covered it with a soft flannel cover, and then placed a large/thick Persian rug over the entire car to further protect it. It sat in that Los Angeles garage unmoved for 20 years. Finally, in 2003 at the age of 83 and after double knee surgery, he realized that he would never be able to drive his beloved 911 again.
The next owner had discovered Mr. Heil’s 911 a couple of years earlier and expressed interest in purchasing it. However, the timing wasn’t right. This next owner was patient and eventually was offered the opportunity to purchase it. Of course, he wasted no time striking up a deal and carefully extracting it from its garage. At the time, the car had around 56k miles. It had never been hit, damaged, left outside, or abused. He took the car to his Porsche mechanic and began a careful mechanical refurbishment while preserving the originality. Highlights of work performed with this owner include:
- Engine reseal, transaxle seals, and gaskets
- Restored blower housing and fan
- Restored/OHM tested the engine wiring harness
- Rebuilt the original alternator
- Completely rebuilt the original Zenith carbs and linkage
- New clutch kit and flywheel service
- Fuel tank removed, flushed, and cleaned
- OEM cloth covered fuel lines, fuel filter, fuel pump
- Replaced old ball joints and new Koni strut inserts
- Sway and torsion bar bushings
- Upgraded turbo tie-rods
- All suspension nuts and bolts properly cadmium finished
- Restored trailing arms, sway bars, spring plates and hardware in proper finish
- CVs rebuilt and resealed with new factory boots
- Koni classic rear shocks installed
- Brakes disassembled and restored with new ATE seals
- New brake lines with new reservoir/fill tank and new ATE 19mm master cylinder
- Replaced all door, headlight, tail light, hood, and deck lid seals
- Restored deep-6 Fuchs wheels
This owner was meticulous in his care for this 911. For the next 14 years, he only drove a few thousand miles and only on sunny days. He sold it in 2017 to another local Los Angeles collector/enthusiast. This owner wanted to make sure everything was in tip-top running order as it still hadn’t been driven a lot over the past decade. So, he turned to TRE Motorsports of Van Nuys, California to go through everything on the car. He invested nearly $20,000 in the following services:
- Top-end engine rebuild:
- Oil return tubes
- Valves, guides, and springs
- Ring set
- Chain rails
- Carrera chain tensioners
- Rebuild heads
- Shift shaft seal
- New oil lines, fittings, gaskets, seals
- Adjust valves
- Spark plugs
- Pirelli CN36 tires
- Marelli point set
- Air filter
- Oil service (Brad Penn)
- Adjust shift linkage
- Adjust suspension and alignment
- Repair windshield washer system
- Replace muffler
- Install new front strut inserts
The owner was a busy professional and never ended up doing the touring he planned with this 911. He drove less than a couple hundred miles total during his care. So, he gave the car to us in January of 2019 to help prepare it for the next owner. The first thing we did was take it to our local Porsche air-cooled expert and have him look over the car as well as flush the brake system and install a new deck lid shock. He found the car to be in excellent original condition. We then performed a major detail. Finally, the entire exterior was ceramic coated in C-Quartz Nano to further protect the original finish.
In February 2019, we sold the car to Jeff Zwart, famed Road & Track photographer, action film director, and Pike’s Peak multiple champion/record holder. For the past 6 years, Jeff has added 10k miles. He used it for media shoots and other Porsche-related content. He is close friends with Dieter of famed Andial and had Dieter look after the car with routine services. On April 18th, 2022 at 68,311 miles, Dieter performed the following services:
- Complete engine tune-up, including valve adjustment
- Oil service
- Ohm test all ignition wires (result was good)
- Repair right side header
- Remove, repack, and seal right side axleshaft
- Replace both batteries
- Clean fuseboxes and replace all fuses/clean up wires
- Repair and reinstall windshield washer system
- Repair fresh air blower system
- New hood shocks
- Brake fluid flush
Although Zwart loves the car and repeatedly shares with me how good of a car it is, he feels that its originality would be better preserved with another caretaker. Since we sold him the car nearly 6 years ago, he asked us to help him. Prior to listing it, we had our mechanic repair a small exhaust leak as well as perform a valve adjustment with new spark plugs and valve cover gaskets. He also did a leakdown test, which the results were excellent (results off of 100%):
1) 3% 2) 2% 3) 3% 4) 3% 5) 3% 6) 3%
The exterior of this 911 is stunning. It appears to be all original and checked with a paint meter. There are minimal signs of use with just a few minor chips that have been professionally touched up. All the brightwork and deco trim also appear original and in very good shape. The glass looks great with no significant blemishes or chips. There is a very shallow dent on the roof that’s only noticeable in just the right light as well as some light road rash on the lower rear bumpers, behind the rear wheels. All the exterior lights work and a fresh set of correct fog lights will be installed before delivery (the original lens broke and is NLA). The deep-6 Fuchs have no curb rash and are wearing new period-correct Michelin tires. The brakes have over 75% life remaining. The spare wheel is still wearing its original German Firestone Phoenix tire, which is in remarkable condition considering its age.
The interior looks equally as nice and original as the exterior. The front seats have no tears, rips, or cracks with minimal signs of wear. The rear seats, of course, look perfect. We just had our upholstery expert carefully remove the driver seat cover, reinforce it, and repair the horsehair for better support. The headliner has no tears or rips and just some light discoloration. The original sun visors are some of the best I’ve seen with no puffing. The interior headliner lights work. The door panels are in great shape with no warping of the pockets. The original T-spec carpet, which can be fragile, is in remarkable shape with no signs of significant wear or stains. The dash is also one of the best original examples I’ve seen. It has no cracks and zero warping. The radio grill fits perfectly. All the gauges work properly including the clock. The period-correct Becker radio has been restored and fitted with a Bluetooth module and a new dash speaker.
There is something special about the way an early long-hood 911 that has never been apart drives. However, throw in that mix a low-mile well-cared for example and you have a recipe for a sublime driving experience. Everything feels so tight and crisp. It’s a delight to drive. It starts easily with the first turn of the key and holds a smooth idle as the motor comes up to driving temperature. It does not smoke, pop, or have any other issues. The power delivery is surprisingly strong with excellent and immediate throttle response. The handling is precise and the car tracks straight. The brakes have a wonderful initial bite with no fading or pulling.
This 911 is California registered with both correct original blue plates.
This Porsche 911 comes with 1 key, owner’s manual, Porsche COA, floor mats, original letter from Ferry Porsche, original/first vehicle registration, correct jack, original tool kit, and original spare tire/wheel.
