This 944 was built on June 8th, 1983, and sold new on July 8th, 1983 by Rusnak Porsche + Audi of Pasadena, California.  It was ordered with the following factory options:

  • Forged alloy wheels (Fuchs)
  • Stabilizers (front and rear)
  • Cassette and coin holder
  • Partial leather seats

The following items were purchased, and dealer installed before delivery:

  • Concord S32 cassette radio with electric antenna
  • Hoff-Co alarm
  • Plush floor mats with “Porsche” lettering (4)
  • 5 year/50k mile service contract

The MSRP was $21,075.  That’s nearly $60k in today’s dollars.

The first owners were Donald and Patricia Boaz of Lakewood, California.  They drove this 944 regularly from 1983 to 1991.  During that time, they accrued 20,000 miles.  They were extremely conscientious owners and always serviced the car at the Rusnak or Circle Porsche.  Oil changes were performed consistently from 6 to 12 months apart during their care.  In 1991, the car was taken off the road and stored for the following 19 years.  They clearly stored it covered in a cool place as the original preservation condition is outstanding.  After 1991, Donald stopped using it as his daily driver and added it to his large auto collection.  In late 2019, his tow guy who helped move his collection around, which he had done the same for Vasek Polak and Carl Thompson in the day, was asked to help find a new caretaker for this 944.  He took it down to his friend and shop owner here in Orange County to have him help find a buyer.

After being removed from its slumber and before delivery to the current owner, this 944 had a full service, which included the following:

  • Major service
  • Flush fuel from tank and lines
  • New fuel pump
  • Rebuilt injectors
  • Spark plugs
  • Coil, spark plug wires, distributor rotor and cap
  • Oil service
  • Coolant system flush
  • Transmission oil service
  • Brake fluid flush
  • Thermostat and fan switch
  • Professional paint correction by Jeff at Classy Cars in Costa Mesa, CA.

The current Southern California owner purchased this survivor in February of 2020 with 20,648 miles.  He only drove it for a year/1,200 miles before health issues prevented him from enjoying it anymore.  Prior to taking delivery, this owner had the additional significant services performed with the help of the seller, which included:

  • Brake lines (all)
  • Front and rear brake rotors and pads
  • Fuel hoses/lines (all)
  • Front and rear suspension bushings
  • Rear sway bar drop links
  • Front and rear control arms with bushings and sway bar bushings
  • Motor mounts
  • Front engine reseal
  • Cam housing reseal
  • Front crank seal
  • Replace engine head gasket set
  • Timing belt and balance shaft belt
  • Belt roller, tensioner roller and idler
  • Water pump (updated) with gasket
  • Alternator/AC belt
  • Mount and balance Pirelli P7 tires
  • Hood pad
  • Fuel filter
  • Hood shocks
  • Air filter

After the current owner began driving the car, he took it back to the original selling Porsche dealer, Rusnak, to have them inspect it and perform the following minor services:

  • Four-wheel alignment
  • Secure wiring harness
  • Replaced drive belt

In total, nearly $10k has recently been invested in this 944 to make sure it’s ready for years of enjoyment.

The exterior of this 944 looks amazing.  It is clear that it was never abused and even stored properly during its nearly two-decade hiatus.  The paint finish is all original with the exception of the passenger side pop-up headlight.  The finish is excellent and it just went through a 10-hour paint correction, polish, and ceramic coating by Ed Shine to further protect the original finish.  There are minimal signs of use.  The rubber, deco trim, and light lenses are all in excellent shape as well.  The vinyl adhesive stone guards are original to the car and showing some checking.  There are some small chips of paint where they were attempted to be removed.  The current owner has purchased 4 new ones (in front of and behind the rear wheel) from Porsche and are included if the next owner wants to replace them.

The glass is all original including the windshield and wearing their proper factory stampings.  There is one small chip on the windshield that has been professionally filled.  Other than that, there are no other major blemishes.  The factory 15” Fuchs are wearing near full tread Pirelli P7 tires.  These are the new release compound of the old style.  Although they were installed new in 2020, they are date stamped 2016 due to the limited periodic runs by Pirelli.  There are no signs of aging.  The wheels have no curb rash and are wearing their original anodized factory finish.  The brakes are new all the way around with nearly full life on the pads and no lips on the rotors.

The engine bay and underside are equally nice and show no signs of misuse.  The rubber in the engine bay has mostly been replaced and there are no cracks or other signs of age.  All the factory VIN decals are present on all the proper panels.  The underside is tidy with no signs of prior damage or corrosion.  It too is wearing its original factory finish.  There are no signs of oil or other fluids leaking.  The condition further confirms this is a low-mile Southern California survivor.

The interior looks just as pristine as the rest of the car.  The leather seats (front and rear) look new and barely used.  There are no rips, tears, or even heavy cracks in the leather surfaces.  The headliner, carpet, and door panels all look fresh with no signs of heavy wear.  The original dealer-installed floor mats are still in the car and also have no stains or signs of wear.  The dashboard is perfect with no cracks or warping.  This is remarkable as these dashes are very fragile and known to crack in the first few years of ownership.  All the gauges work properly as do the electric mirrors and windows.  A later Blaupunkt Bluetooth stereo has been installed and works nicely.  The electric antenna also works.  The original dealer-installed Concord tape deck was recently removed and saved for the next owner.  The A/C system blows ice cold as well.

This 944 starts easily on the first try and holds an even idle.  The power is very linear throughout the rev range.  There is no hesitation in acceleration.  The transmission shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping.  The clutch engages perfectly.  The handling is balanced and precise.  There is a surprising amount of grip and the car tracks straight.  The brakes have a strong initial bite and are easy to modulate for heel-toe action.  This would be a perfect addition to any collection as well as being a blast on longer driving/touring events.

California registration is paid through July of 2021 and it passes the CA smog test.

This 944 comes with 2 master keys, 2 wheel lock keys (wheel locks have been removed and are not available), original window MSRP sticker, original dealer order sheet, owner’s manual with vinyl cover, original maintenance book with stamps, original receipts/documentation, original interior colors brochure, original magazine reviews, factory sales brochures (2), 1982/83 Panorama magazines with 944 features, Concord radio (original to car/dealer-installed), custom Colgan car bra, custom car cover, replacement factory stone guards, original tool kit, sunroof vinyl cover, jack, and space-saver spare.

Why did I sell my Citroën SM? To buy a Porsche 944.

I’ve never thought of myself as a car collector. To me, it’s more akin to a tasting menu. I call it automotive tapas. This is a big reason why I do what I do. Sometimes I just need a week with a particular car. Other times, I have to own it.

I had no intention of selling my Citroën. However, the right owner and money came along. I realized I had my fun with it and I’ve always wanted a 944.

Although the 928 is my first Porsche love, the 944 has pulled at my heartstrings since high school. To me, they are beautiful. The proportions are flawless. They have perfect weight balance. The design and functionality of hatchbacks appeal to me. But above all, I love box flares. I dream about them. Are there any better kinds of flares? (Don’t they pair nicely with the vintage style Pirelli P7 tires?)

By now you’re probably thinking, “why don’t you just buy this one?” With each 944 that we sell, I ask myself, “Is this the one?”

Alas, I recently bought another car, and my daughter is still halfway through private college. However, the temptation for this one is quite strong.

I really hope the next owner is local.
