I’ve preached for years about early Carreras being my personal favorites of the “Impact Bumper” era cars. Although the later G50 transmissions are stronger, the last years of the 915 gearboxes are the best of a 15-year run and were much lighter. As a result, these cars feel quicker and much more responsive than the heavier G50 cars. The gearboxes are very strong and durable if you shift them properly. They force you to learn how to drive an air-cooled 911 correctly. I love this generation of 911s so much that I have one of my own.
This Carrera was built on September 25th, 1984, and sold new on March 26th, 1985 by the Mark Porsche + Audi in Fresno, California. This was one of the last Carreras built for 1984 model year. It was ordered with the following factory options:
- California Emissions
- Steering Wheel with Raised Hub
- 16” Fuchs Forged Alloy Wheels*
- Leather Sport Seats
- Full Leather Interior
- Sport Shock Absorbers
- Alarm System
- Automatic Heating Control
- Blaupunkt Radio – Monterey
- Cruise Control
- Electric Sliding Sunroof
- Dunlop Tires
*At the dealer and before delivery when new, the selling Porsche dealer installed factory front and rear spoilers as well as 16×7 and 16×8 Fuchs wheels. These components are still on the vehicle.
The first owner was Paul Gomez of Merced, California. He ordered this car at the beginning of Summer 1984. As a result, he received one of the last ’84 Carreras built. He wanted factory spoilers as well as wider 7- and 8-inch wide 16” wheels and ordered those items. The dealer had to install those items before delivery. Paul used this 911 as his daily driver for the first decade of ownership and added nearly 80k miles. After that, it became his weekend car. Paul was a teacher for 42 years and he owned this 911 for 35 years and 98k miles. The car lived most of its life in California and he told the current owner that the car was only driven in the rain twice in its life and both times were for less than 20 minutes when heading back from Monterey car week. During his care he serviced it regularly, despite the miles. Besides oil services and regular service, the only repair he ever had to do was replace the alternator in 1997 at 85k miles and the fuel pump in 2019 at 97k miles. Oil, minor, and major services logged throughout his ownership consist of the following:
- 4/85 1,060 miles (first oil service)
- 6/85 4,422 miles (oil service)
- 8/85 8,186 miles (oil service)
- 1/86 13,186 miles (major service)
- 6/86 17,535 miles (oil service)
- 8/86 21,181 miles (oil service)
- 10/86 22,736 miles (service)
- 2/87 27,708 miles (oil service)
- 4/87 30,052 miles (major service)
- 7/87 33,872 miles (oil service)
- 10/87 37,589 miles (oil service)
- 12/87 40,596 miles (oil service)
- 5/88 45,640 miles (major service)
- 10/88 50,758 miles (oil service)
- 10/89 59,401 (major service)
- 4/90 66,773 miles (service/no plugs)
10/91 75,714 miles (oil service)

Paul Gomez moved to Reno, Nevada in 2019 and took this Porsche with him. By now, he was in his 80s and having difficulty getting in and out of the car. He sold it to a mutual friend of ours who also lives in Reno on June 5th, 2020 with around 97k miles on it.
The current owner is a long-time Porsche enthusiast going back many decades and has owned hundreds of Porsches over the years ranging from a 1964 911 to the 997 generation GT cars. When we first started AutoKennel 20 years ago, he was one of our first big clients and we sold a dozen Porsches for him from 2006 to 2011. The one common theme with his cars was they were all very well sorted and desirable. In the 2000s, he had a full-time mechanic named Victor Ofner who was a savant when it came to air-cooled cars. He semi-retired for a while, which was why our client sold much of his collection with us, but eventually, Victor opened a small shop in Prescott, Arizona called Vic’s Workshop.
Our client purchased this 911 because it was not only a 1 owner California Porsche, but it was incredibly original and well-preserved. A few months after purchasing this 911, he shipped it to Victor to have him go through everything to make sure it was completely sorted. Victor spent the next few months and 122 hours on this Carrera, which included an engine and transmission out full engine reseal. Highlights of work done from 9/20 through 12/20 include:

Once all the work was completed, this owner spent the next 4 years and 16k miles enjoying this car with several trips to Monterey, California for Car Week and Rennsport reunion as well as some other local drives. He entered the car in the Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours on the Avenue Porsche class (1948-1989), in which he won first place. Further services and upgrades he had done after the initial work by Victor included:

Upon completion of the sorting and rejuvenation, the current owner entered this Carrera in the Carmel-By-The-Seat Concours on the Avenue on August 10th, 2021. He won 1st in class in the very competitive 911 category. This is a huge win. The judges were shocked that a 1-owner California 911 driven 100k miles could stay this original and look this good.
The current owner has had a great time reliving his 911 passion and is ready to move on to something a bit more comfortable and easier to get into for his 6’-5” older frame. He shipped it down to us with Intercity Lines and gave us carte blanche to do what we needed to do for the next caretaker. Between our detailer and other vendors, another 40+ hours were invested into preparing this Carrera, which included:
- Full steam cleaning of the interior, including removing the seats and belts
- Leather conditioning of the full leather interior
- Remove wheels and thoroughly clean wheel wells
- Degrease engine and steam/hand clean and condition
- Steam clean underside of vehicle
- Full paint correction with polish
- Ceramic coating with GTechniq
- Touch up paint minor chips with factory Guards Red
- Treat all outside trim and rubber
- Remove all possible dents throughout the car
- Services cost – $2,800
The exterior of this 911 is in amazing original survivor condition and well cared for and garaged its entire life. The paint is 100% original across all the panels and verified with a paint meter. There are some minor paint nicks here and there from normal use, which have been professionally touched up and are barely noticeable. Both owners went to great lengths to not refinish anything to preserve the originality. The lower rear valence has some minor bends from a parking curb. We’ve lightly bent it back and touched up the paint. The left front fog light lens, right rear tail light lens, and left rear reflector have superficial cracks. All the trim is in great shape and original with very light signs of use. The glass is also all original and wears the proper factory stampings. The windshield has some light rash, but nothing significant and no major chips or cracks. The factory Fuchs wheels are in great original shape with no major blemishes or large curb rash marks. They are wearing Michelin tires installed 15k miles/4 years ago. They have just over a third of life remaining with no signs of age or cracking. The brake pads have about a half-life remaining with no major lips on the rotors. All the exterior lights work. The owner had Harvey Weidman refinish a stock 15” steel wheel with Michelin tire as a full-size spare option*, which is available for purchase separately.
The interior is equally as nice and indicative of a properly owned 911 by an enthusiast. The full leather factory sport seats have no significant blemishes and just some typical light wear on the driver’s exit bolsters. The backs of the leather have some light superficial scratches from years of use. The headliner is in great shape with no tears or heavy staining. The original sun visors are also in good shape with just mild puffing. The rear seats look unused, and a protective carpet piece was custom-made to snap in for further protection. The carpet has no major stains or heaving wear marks, and the floor mats are new from Lloyds. The full leather door panels have no significant warping of the door pockets or any other major flaw. The door stays are in good shape as well. The full leather dash has some typical warping on the corners near the glass and mild bulging around the center vents, which is very common with full leather interiors. However, there are no cracks. All the gauges work properly, including the clock. Also, the interior lights work. Although the original radio was recently restored and the antenna is new, neither works and we aren’t sure why. The A/C system is complete, but it doesn’t work. The power mirrors, windows, and sunroof all work properly.
This Carrera starts easily on the first try and holds an even idle. The SCART muffler has a sporty bark to it, but at speed, it’s barely noticeable and easy to live with. The power delivery is strong throughout the rev range with no hesitation. The transmission shifts smoothly between the gears with no grinding and the clutch engages properly with no slipping. The brakes have a nice bite with no fading or pulling. The handling is crisp and responsive while also being compliant on uneven surfaces.
This 911 has a clean/clear Nevada title. For California buyers, the car has the original catalytic converter, which can be reinstalled to pass smog. It was smog-checked every 2 years in California up to 2018 and always passed.
This Carrera comes with 3 keys, the original owner’s manual with vinyl case, the original maintenance booklet with dealer stamps, the Porsche Production Specifications Certificate, factory tool kit, space saver spare, factory air compressor, factory jack, custom carpet rear parcel shelf protector, new carpet dash pad protector, car bra, original touch-up paint, and 3-ring binder of receipts.
*Available for an additional fee is the catalytic converter, stock muffler, and extra full-size 15” spare steel wheel with tire.
**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.
Turbo nesting is the highest level for a Porsche owner.
The owner of this Carrera may not have written the book on Turbo nesting, but he certainly added a few chapters.
I’ve known this owner for nearly 25 years; he was a huge part of AutoKennel’s success in the early years.
He had a large collection here in Southern California with a full-time mechanic who was just as obsessive as he was regarding originality.
20 years ago, I didn’t understand his compulsion, but I certainly appreciate it today.
After his mechanic semi-retired and moved out of state over a decade ago, this owner liquidated his entire collection and got out of the hobby. We helped him sell some amazing cars.
4 years ago, this owner called me all excited about this 1-owner, original paint survivor Carrera he found. I warned him about his nesting disorder, and he promised he would control it and not go crazy.
Like a junkie, he couldn’t help himself. He found his old mechanic hiding in Arizona and hired him to “sort” this 911 just as he liked.
122 hours and $40k+ later, he was happy…especially after winning the coveted 911 class at the Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours on the Avenue.
