The final run of the impact bumper cars ran from model year 1987 to halfway through 1989.  Although horsepower increased to 217, the most significant upgrade was the transmission.  From 1972 through 1986, Porsche relied on the 915 model gearbox.  It was more fragile and took a more precise shifting behavior to ensure a longer life.  Starting in 1987, the G50 transmission was introduced.  It was built by Getrag and had a Borg Warner synchromesh.  The result was a more forgiving shifting as well as increased reliability.  Also, the turbo hydraulic clutch system was used for easier pedal pressure.  The final mechanical upgrade was a thermostatically controlled front fender oil cooler fan.  These models have proven to be some of the most sought-after air-cooled Porsches.  2,916 coupes were built for the U.S. market in the 1987 model year.

This Carrera was built on December, 23rd, 1986.  It was sold new on October 22nd, 1987, by the Eckhaus Porsche of Leesburg, Virginia.  It was ordered with the following factory options:

  • US standard emissions
  • Steering wheel with raised hub
  • Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 cassette radio
  • Forged alloy wheels 16”
  • 8-way full power seat, left
  • Lumbar support, left
  • Front and rear spoilers
  • Electric sliding sunroof
  • Dunlop tires

The first owner was Diana McCuskey who initially was in Wheeling, West Virginia, but registered the car in Long Key, Florida.  By the early 1990s, she moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, and brought the car with her.  She kept this Carrera for 12 years/12k miles before selling it in June of 1999 to David Witt of Omaha, Nebraska.  It appears that David purchased the car from Diana and drove it back home, stopping along the way at the Porsche dealer in Salt Lake City, Utah for a service.  David kept this Porsche for 14 years and added another 10k miles.  David sold it in August of 2013 with 22k miles to Trevor MacDougall of Rothesay, New Brunswick Canada.  Prior to his purchase, he had a pre-purchase inspection performed including a compression and leakdown test.  The results were excellent.  Compression was 175-180 and leakdown was 4%-6% off across all cylinders.

Trevor kept this 911 for the last 11 years and only added 9k miles.  He lightly used it on fair weather days and properly stored it inside.  He serviced it at the same shop, Alpine Motors of Saint John, New Brunswick.  During his ownership, this Carrera needed no more than routine oil services and other fluid flushes.  In July of this year, Trevor sold his Carrera with 31,500 miles to a dealership in Quebec.  Upon receipt, this dealer had the following work performed in preparation for sale:

  • New Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires
  • Refinish the wheel centers as well as anodize center caps and lug nuts
  • Replace steering column bushing
  • Major service and A/C work as well as misc. services (7/24 @ 31,520 miles)
    • Replaced A/C compressor, leak test, charge system
    • Replaced alternator and A/C belts
    • Valve adjustment
    • Spark plugs
    • New engine sound pad
    • Air filter
    • Oil service
    • Valve cover gaskets
    • Replaced right door window motor and switch
  • Refreshed complete brake system (8/24)
    • All 4 rotors, pads, and sensors replaced
    • Replaced parking brake shoes
    • Rebuild all 4 brake calipers

This dealer did a trade deal with the current owner and our client, who has a dealership in Canada as well as residences here in the U.S.  Since this vehicle was originally from the U.S., he decided to import it and register it to his company in Ohio.  We’ve sold several Porsches for this owner and he always has an eye for the best examples.  This one is no exception.  In preparation for sale, we had the correct size new Interstate battery installed, the A/C system recharged, and installed a new blower motor for the front condenser.

The exterior looks fantastic and typical of what a well-preserved and low-mile example should be.  The paint has a great shine to it with minimal signs of use.  There are no significant chips, scratches, or dents that we could find.  The majority of the paint is original as verified with a paint meter.  There is a tiny spot on the right rear fender near the door where a superficial repair was made when in the care of the first owner or even before being sold (yes, many small repairs were made at the port or dealer before delivery).  Visually, there is no perceivable difference.  The sunroof panel might’ve been repainted due to a scratch, but we can’t tell and there is just a note of it on the inspection report when the 2nd owner purchased the car in 1999.

The glass appears to be all original and wears the proper factory stampings.  There are no significant chips or scratches.  All the exterior lights work properly and the lenses are in good condition.  All the body VIN stickers are present.  The factory Fuchs wheels have no major blemishes and are wrapped in new Continental tires with full life remaining.  The brakes are also new and at full life.

The interior looks equally as nice and original, which is indicative of a low-mile survivor.  The leather seats look great with no cracks or tears and minimal signs of wear.  The headliner has no stains, tears, or sagging.  The headliner lights work properly and the sun visors are in good shape.  The carpet has no stains or major wear areas.  Front custom Cocomat floormats look fairly new.  The door pockets have no flaws or warping issues.  The dash is perfect with no cracks or warping either.  All the gauges work, including the clock.  The original radio works and it appears the speakers have been upgraded at one point.  The power windows, mirrors, and sunroof all operate properly.

This 911 is a pleasure to drive and everything feels tight and responsive, which is indicative of a low-mile well-cared for survivor. It starts easily on the first try and holds an even idle. Once at operating temperature, it pulls evenly throughout the rev range with no hesitation. The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding or slipping. The clutch operates properly and engages slightly higher. The handling is crisp and direct. The car tracks straight. The steering wheel is just a hair/mm off center. The car ride height is the proper Euro/ROW height and not only has the correct stance. The brakes are all new and have an excellent initial bite with no fading or pulling.

This Carrera has all the correct factory emissions equipment and should pass California smog testing.  As a CA licensed dealer, for CA buyers, we will be smog testing this Carrera prior to delivery.

This Carrera comes with 2 keys, original owner’s manual with vinyl cover, original maintenance booklet with dealer stamps, 3-ring binder with service records/receipts going back over 25 years, pair of custom Cocomats®, original tool kit, original tire inflator, space saver spare, and jack.

**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud.  All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.

The Tale of a Tail.

For more than 20 years, whenever we get an ‘80s air-cooled 911 with the spoiler package, the rear spoiler (referred to as a “whale tail”) inevitably becomes a topic of conversation.

From being all the rage of the 1980s, the desire for a whale tale waned over the next couple of decades.

Clients would tell me they just wanted the front spoiler, not the rear one.  This is just crazy because they are designed to work together.

It would be like putting a tiller instead of a steering wheel in your sports car.

As spoilers, wings, and other aerodynamic aids become more commonplace on modern cars, I’ve seen a growing demand for vintage 911 air-cooled spoilers, especially among younger buyers.

So, if you don’t want the spoiler, it’s easy enough to put a flat deck lid on instead.

Just don’t get rid of that whale tail, as they are becoming an endangered species.
