After the launch of the Turbo S in the previous year, Porsche made the coveted M44/52 turbo engine, which produced 247hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque the standard engine in all Turbo models. Its 0 to 60 times were 5.5 seconds, which was incredible for an 80’s car. Porsche’s 928 S4 4-piston ABS braking system was also now standard. To handle this power upgrade, these Turbos got a strengthened transmission (1st and 2nd gears were hardened). An external oil cooler was added for longevity and reliability. A new high-friction clutch was installed to allow for quicker engagement and more precise shifts. Finally, a limited slip differential (with 40% lockup) helped transfer the power to the ground.
This Turbo was built on October 21st, 1988 and sold new by Huntington Autohaus, LTD Porsche + Audi on January 9th, 1989. It was ordered with the following factory options:
- Club Sport suspension package (M030)
- Koni shocks/struts
- Forged Club Sport wheels
- Upgraded 928 4-piston brakes
- Bigger sway bars (30mm/25.5mm)
- Locking differential (40%)
- Cruise control
- Hifi sound system
- Additional amplifier
- Anti-theft device
- Air conditioning
- Bosch anti-lock/ABS system
- Removable sunroof
- Partial leather front seats
- CD player “CD-2” MIT radio
- 8-way power driver seat with lumbar and heat
The first owner lived in Buffalo, NY and kept the car for 5-years/32k-miles. It was then sold to the next owner in Chicago, IL. This owner kept the car for 15-years before selling it on July 10th, 2010 to the next owner in Leslie, Michigan. He kept the car for 9-years before selling it to the current Southern California owner in April of 2019 with 62k-miles. The current owner is a long time vintage car enthusiast with a wide variety of special cars. He’s beginning to focus more on vintage BMWs. As a result, he is selling this Porsche and a long hood 911 coming soon. Shortly after purchasing this 944 Turbo, the current owner took it to Comeau Racing to go through the car and perform any necessary services. Tim Comeau is well respected in the 944 community. He’s been racing these cars for over 3 decades and works exclusively on these transaxle cars.
Services performed in May of 2019 at 61,800 miles includes:
- Vehicle inspection
- Timing belt and rollers service
- Repaired loose shifter
- Hatch struts
- Rear muffler hangers
- Tighten rear cam housing cork seal
- Repair leak at rear of lower balance shaft seal
- Steel front bushings at power steering pump
- Front right sway bar bushings
- Repair airbox
- Oil pressure sending unit
- Repair dump pipe flange
- Drained old fuel from system
- Installed stock ECU chip
- Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires
Tim found this 944 to be a very nice driver example with no signs of damage, major corrosion, or other issues. He did not do the water pump as it appeared to have been done recently. He noted that the left ball join was starting to show wear but not something that needed attention immediately. Also, the left rear jack point was damaged from someone not jacking up the car properly in addition to some light battery tray corrosion. The battery was pulled, and the tray wire brushed. Then the few spots were sprayed with Lewry Molly rust neutralizer.
The exterior of this 944 Turbo is in very good condition and looks to be well cared-for and regularly garaged. The paint is in decent condition with some light blemishes here and there. It appears about half the paint is original while other panels have been painted over the years. Visually, it all matches. There are some slight differences in the paint meter readings. However, there are no signs filler or other significant damage. The sunroof panel and driver side pop up headlight have some checking. All the body panels are original and wearing the proper VIN decals. The glass also appears to be original with the proper factory stampings. There are no significant cracks or chips. The rubber on the inside of the rear hatch glass is slightly delaminating, which is common. However, it does not leak. The factory Club Sport wheels have been polished. They are in good condition with no significant curb rashes or other blemishes and just some light peeling of paint on the inside. They are wearing Pirelli Trofeo R tires with about 1,000 miles on them. They were installed a little over a year ago and have around 75% life remaining. The front brake pads have over 75% life remaining with a slight lip on the rotors. The rear pads are at around 50% and the rotors are in good shape. All the exterior lights work.
The interior is very nice and shows light use commensurate with the age/miles. The front leather seats are in good shape with light wear on the driver side exit bolster and a tiny seam separation on the driver seat near the front of the bottom. The rear seats look fresh as does the carpet and headliner. The door panels are in very good shape with only a small part of the driver door plastic trim for the pocket coming lose. The dash has no cracks or signs of warping. All the gauges work properly as does the LCD clock. A newer Bluetooth Kenwood stereo was installed. It powers up properly and connects to mobile devices. However, no sound comes out of the speakers. An ADS amp was installed in the trunk. The power mirrors, windows, and sunroof tilt all work as well as the interior lights. The A/C system blows air, but not cold. The system is still R12 and the compressor is making noise when activated. It was inspected by a local shop and they recommend replacing the compressor. The power seats work including the driver side heated seat.
This Turbo drives fantastically. These Turbos are a blast to drive and are surprisingly quick. This example starts easily with no excessive smoking and holds an even idle. Power comes on strong with minimal lag. Shifting is easy and precise with no grinding. The clutch feels good with no slipping. Handling is crisp and well-balanced. The car tracks straight. This example would be ideal for vintage touring events or even daily use.
This Turbo passes California’s strict emissions/smog test and is registered to June of 2021.
This 944 Turbo comes with 2 main keys, original owner’s manuals including maintenance book/vinyl cover, recent belt service receipt, original car bra, car cover, original luggage area cargo cover, two Weltmeister ECU chips, original tool kit, air compressor, front floor mats, jack, and space saver spare.**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.
18-months ago my wife stopped looking at our inventory.
For those of you playing along with the AutoKennel® home game and keeping score, May of 2019 we sold a black 944. Jennifer Kramer wanted it. I sold it. She was angry.
Not just aw-shucks-that-would’ve-been-nice-haha angry, but I’m-not-talking-to-you-for-48-hours-slam-garage-door angry.
As you can imagine, I’ve been a bit nervous about telling her that we have another black 944 for sale. Plus, it’s the turbo/fast one. It’s probably best if I don’t bring it home. If I do, I should rent one of those police dog training padded uniforms to wear when I tell her we aren’t keeping it.
Without thinking, I drove it home one night and parked it in the garage. When I heard the garage door open, memories of the last time came flooding back. Uh-oh. Jennifer stormed into the house all giddy with excitement. I think I reflexively mumbled, “NO.” She glared at me through cold squinting eyes. I told her that we can keep this one but have to sell her 914 we named, “Maggie.” Like trying to stop a crashing wave, my poor choice of words just rolled past my tongue.
I hope it doesn’t rain next week as I think I’m riding my bike to and from work.

We appreciate the countless calls from brokers and dealers. As much as we would love to quickly “wholesale” this car to industry partners so they can make a quick profit, the car is on consignment (as are all of our offerings) and the owners have the final say.
If you have actually taken the time to read this far in our detailed description, I can’t imagine there are any questions you may have. However, if there is something I missed or you would prefer to hear the warm sound of a human voice (mine) reiterating the research I’ve provided above, I would be happy to help.
