Going back to the early 1930s, Porsche established a design engineering business in Stuttgart.  Porsche struggled financially in the 1990s, so they used their design engineering to help other auto manufacturers, including Mercedes and Audi.  Famously, the RS2 was born to help Audi compete against BMW’s new M3 (E36).  Utilizing components from Porsche’s 964 and 993 program, this Audi/Porsche collaboration produced 2,891 RS2 Avants based on the Audi A80 platform over 16 months.  The car was built at Porsche’s historic Rössle building in Zuffenhausen (the same location where the Mercedes 500E and Porsche 959 were built).  Audi provided painted body parts and other add-on components while Porsche took care of the rest.  With the Porsche-designed 2.2L turbocharged 5-cylinder/20 valve engine producing 315 hp and 302 lb. ft. tq., this was now the world’s fastest estate (aka wagon) as well as the first Audi to break the 250km/h top speed barrier and carry the RS badge.  It was also the fastest production vehicle from 0 to 30 mph (1.5 seconds).  Yes, even faster than a McLaren F1!

Development and components from Porsche included the following:

  • 17” lightweight forged wheels from the Porsche 968 Club Sport
  • Porsche new Aero side mirrors and door handles
  • Porsche designed gauges
  • Big Red Brembo brakes from Porsche Turbo cars
  • Porsche designed suspension (40mm lower than standard A80 Avant)

Recently, automotive journalist Jason Cammisa drove this very car and wrote about the driving experience.  He captured exactly what I experienced when I first drove it:

Verdict Audi RS2 Avant: one of the few Audi’s I’ve loved. I blame Porsche.

This is not a diss on Audi. Audi makes wonderful cars. But I’ll take my journalist hat off, put my enthusiast hat on, and say that the values core to Audi don’t line up with the things that I love about cars. It’s just a matter of personal taste.

The B7 RS4 is one of the exceptions.  And now, the RS2.

Genuinely great steering: superbly talkative, pretty accurate, really well-weighted. You feel more tramlining than anything else but you feel something!  The engine is blippy and revvy unlike any other 20-valve 5-cylinder Audi I’ve driven — responsive and great.  Sounds SO GAHDAMN GOOD with so many complex resonances throughout the rev range. It’s a little muuurrrrrr inside the car, but sounds amazing outside, with hilarious zis-a-zis-zis-zis blowoff noises.

Boosty as fuuuuhhck, with no real boost available until 3k and then it hits with a wallop that elicits actual LOLz. It’s holyshit fast.

The shifter is amazing, so is the clutch pedal’s engagement.

Also, the suspension is great — tuned perfectly; great ride, perfect body control. Hideous plowing limit-understeer (and it’ll spin the inside FRONT wheel on tight corners) but feels like it at least has a lot of bar trying to push the back around. Feels tiny in a good way, great visibility, perfect driving position, mostly rattle-free interior. And a great seat. Great lights, too.

The looks are incredible, obviously. It’s stunning how pear-shaped it looks next to the E30 though — narrow on top, fat bottom.  It also has one of my favorite gauges ever — number of liters of fuel used since it was started. I can’t explain my love for this gauge, other than that it blows my mind knowing just how much gas I’ve used.  And it’s a LOT in this thing. Maybe ‘cuz I couldn’t stay out of the boost. 😈

I love it when you meet a legend and it doesn’t disappoint. The RS2 is deserving of every great thing you’ve ever heard about it.”

Here is another expert video review of this actual Audi RS2 Avant by Derek Tam-Scott.

The exterior of this RS2 looks great, especially in this rare Indigo Blue finish.  The car was completely repainted in its correct factory shade about 7 years/11k miles ago.  The quality of the work was excellent as verified recently by local paint experts.  There are minor signs of wear with some road rash on the lower rockers/lower part of the doors as well as a few minor nicks.  The lower rear bumper has a blemish as well.  The current owner protected the front of the car (hood, front bumper, side mirrors, and front fenders) with PPF.  All the trim and exterior rubber is good.  The glass is also in decent conditoin and appears to be original with the proper factory stampings.  There are a few minor chips on the windshield, which we’ve had professionally filled.  All the exterior lights work.  The factory Porsche Cup 1 wheels have some minor nicks and they are wearing Continental Extreme Contact tires that are less than 2 years old and have about half-life on the rears and just under half-life on the fronts.  The brakes have about half-life remaining.

The interior is nicely preserved and well cared for.  The Recaro leather seats have no tears or rips and just some typical light wear on the exit bolsters.  The rear seats look barely used.  The suede headliner has recently been replaced and is in near-perfect shape.  The door panel inserts are new.  The rest of the door panels look good with no significant flaws.  The unique blue-weave carbon fiber trim looks great with no warping or delamination, which is common.  The carpet is original and has no major stains or heavy wear marks.  The carpet in the trunk/hatch area has a 6” diameter wear spot but is covered by a Weathertech trunk mat.  The dash has no cracks and all the gauges work.  The airbag light is on due to the recent swapping of steering wheels.  The interior lights work.  The power windows and locks work.  The window switches have recently been rebuilt.  Sometimes the driver window will go down and back up again if the button is pushed hard.  The upgraded Bluetooth Continental radio works properly.  The speakers are a bit weak and are older replacements.  The A/C system blows very cold.  The plastic passenger side C-pillar and roof trim in the hatch area are missing.

This RS2 starts easily and holds an even idle.  Once at operating temperature, it revs freely throughout the rev range with surprisingly strong power.  Performance feels similar to Audis that are a couple of decades newer.  The Porsche brakes have exceptional stopping power with no fading or pulling.  The 6-speed manual transmission shifts easily through all the gears with no slipping or grinding.  The clutch engages properly.  The handling is superb and confidence-inspiring.  The stiff suspension sometimes squeaks when going slowly over driveways or lock-to-lock turning.  The car tracks straight and is easy to use daily.

This RS2 is currently registered in Montana.  It can be registered in all U.S. states except California.  We can only sell this RS2 to those with either a DMV dealer’s license (wholesale or retail is fine) or to those who will be shipping and registering the vehicle outside of California.

This Audi comes with 1 working key, 1 key that opens doors but has an immobilizer that doesn’t work, original Audi lock fob/immobilizer (doesn’t work), owner’s manuals in vinyl cover, original maintenance booklet with service stamps, period magazines featuring the RS2, 3-ring binder with service/ownership history, previous registration decals, all importation documentation/EPA papers, original Audi Gamma radio, Continental Bluetooth radio manuals, photos of repaint, small tool kit, jack, extra roof antenna, and full size spare.

In the U.S., this Porsche wagon was a myth for years.

In the 1990s, rumors of a Porsche-developed and built Audi RS2 Avant swirled among my U.S. car friends.

Occasionally, this urban legend would make Yeti-like appearances in obscure European car magazines that were only available at specialty bookstores.

25 years later, we were finally able to get this forbidden fruit.

I was both excited and nervous to drive it.  “Do I want to meet my hero?”  I cautiously asked myself.

A couple of years ago, automotive journalist Jason Cammisa drove this RS2 and said, “I love it when you meet a legend and it doesn’t disappoint. The RS2 is deserving of every great thing you’ve ever heard about it.”

He was 100% right!  I almost didn’t want to like it, let alone love it as I simply have no more room for another car.

Regardless, I’ve still been ruminating about all the permutations and excuses to justify keeping it.

For now, it’s the first and last car I see in the shop.

And yes, I do turn the lights on and off several times in utter disbelief that an actual RS2 is in the Kennel.
