The 993 variant of the Porsche 911 has always been regarded as the best iteration of the great “air-cooled” era.  These cars had the perfect blend of classic Porsche performance with modest creature comforts.  Plus, who can argue with their beautiful styling that just keeps getting better with age?  In particular, the ‘95s have proven to be among the most reliable.  With their OBDI computers, they are highly tunable and don’t have check engine light issues like the later OBDII cars.  With California’s tight smog laws, ownership of 1995s is an easier alternative for California residents.

This 993 was built on November 15th, 1994 and sold new by Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas, Nevada on January 25th, 1995.  It was optioned with the following from the factory:

  • U.S. Emissions
  • Polar Silver Metallic
  • Grey/Midnight Interior/Leather
  • Supple Leather Front & Rear
  • Porsche Floor Mat – Midnight Blue
  • 17”  Cup II Design Light Alloy Wheels
  • Wheel Caps with Colored Porsche Crests
  • Power Seat Package – 8 Way Left & Right
  • Becker Porsche CR-1 Radio
  • Cruise control
  • Electric Sunroof

The MSRP was $66,293, which is approximately $132,000 in today’s dollars.

It appears that BB Tri-Flo stainless steel sport mufflers were added in the past, which give the engine a slightly deeper exhaust note without droning.  Also, a factory Motor Sound Package air box was installed for improved intake sound.

The first owner was Paul Karess of Henderson, Nevada.  He kept this 993 for 4 years and added about 22k miles.  During his care, it appears he serviced the car several times at the selling Porsche dealer.  This 993 then went to an enthusiast from San Diego County.  This next owner kept the car for 19 years and added another 20k miles.  During his care, he serviced this 993 at either Dennis Sherman Foreign Car Service in La Mesa, CA or Porsche of San Diego.  In January of 2018, he sold the car to Porsche of San Diego with 43,923 miles.

Since this owner’s passing, his wife had his neighbor regularly take the car out for a short drive to keep all the fluids moving.  Initially, the son was going to keep this 993, but the timing wasn’t right.  I did an appraisal of this 993 for the estate in November of 2022.  After much consideration, they decided to have me sell it in June of 2023.  Upon receiving the car, we had a new battery installed and our detailer performed a complete paint correction, deep cleaning of the interior, steaming of the chassis, and hand cleaning of the engine.  We sold the car to the current Northern California enthusiast on July 14th, 2023 with 46,700 miles, which he drove hope with no issues.

For the past couple years, this owner has added another 5k miles of fun weekend driving as well as $7k in further improvements and services, which include:

  • Inspection and service at Porsche dealer (8/23 @ 47,199 miles)
    • Oil service
    • Full inspection/verified excellent example
    • New Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 N3 tires mounted/balanced

  • Paintless dent repair – any dents found removed (1/25)
  • Purchased new factory indoor car cover
  • New correct Porsche factory midnight blue floor mats as depicted on the COA
  • Installed new Porsche spoiler wall on rear spoiler
  • New Bosch windshield wiper blades

The exterior of this 993 is immaculate and is clearly a well-cared for example.  The paint looks fantastic with minimal signs of use.  The paint is original and verified with a paint meter.  All the trim and light lenses are in great shape.  The glass, including the windshield, appears to be original and wearing the proper factory stampings.  There is some normal light road rash on the original windshield, which is typical for the age and miles.   However, there are no major chips or scratches.  The factory 17” Cup II wheels have recently been refinished and there are no signs of curb rash.  They are wearing near new Michelin tires that were installed 18 months ago.   The tires have near full tread depth.  The brakes have also been recently replaced and have near full pad life remaining.

The interior is equally as nice, and an indication of how well this 993 was cared for.  It was always garaged.  The leather looks great and just shows minimal wear.  The supple leather upgrade still feels supple. There are no rips, tears, or significant cracks.  The rear seats look unused.  The headliner has no tears or sagging, and all the interior lights work.  The door panels have no warping or blemishes.  The carpet has no stains or heavy wear marks.  The dash has no cracks, and all the gauges, including the clock, work.  The power windows, mirrors, and sunroof all work properly.  The A/C system, despite having considerable recent work, isn’t blowing as cold as it should.  Our specialist believes the blower fan and vent flap might need to be replaced.  The upgraded stereo works great.  The original radio is included.

This 993 drives great and feels like a lower-mile example should.  It starts easily and holds an even idle.  The throttle response is very good and it pulls smoothly throughout the rev range.  The car turns flat thanks to the upgraded Bilstein suspension.  The car has an excellent road feel while still being compliant on uneven surfaces.  The brakes have a good initial bite with no fading or pulling.  The clutch engages perfectly and there is no slipping.  The transmission shifts smoothly with zero grinding.

This 993 has current California registration valid to February of 2026 and it passes the current emissions/smog test.

This 993 C2 includes 1 key, Porsche leather key fob, owner’s manuals with the vinyl case, original maintenance booklet with dealer stamps, 3 -ring binder of recent service records, original radio with manual, original window sticker, original Porsche PPS/COA in a folder, new Porsche indoor car cover, new front floor mats, tool kit, jack, air-compressor, and space saver spare tire/wheel.

It’s ok if an air-cooled Porsche isn’t for you.

The last 4-5 years have brought a lot of new air-cooled Porsche owners into the fold.

Like cigarette ads from the ‘70s, social media has sensationalized ownership of a vintage 911.

Every time I’d turned on my phone, there was another slow-motion video clip of a couple smiling in their old Porsche with the windows down and their hair waving in the wind as they cruised along a lonely twisting road.

I’d ask each newbie who called why they wanted one.  They’d respond in a mumbled, barely coherent series of hesitant words that sounded more like a fever dream.

“I don’t know…I guess I always wanted one.”  “My friend said this is what I need in my life.” “My dog made me do it.” etc. etc.

I explained to them that these old 911s do everything worse than a new one, and they cost more to maintain.

They would blank stare back at me like I was speaking gibberish.

“But…” I tell them.  “If you truly get it, you will always have an air-cooled Porsche in your life.”

The new Porsches are very good, but the magic of an air-cooled one is inexplicably great.
