The 993 variation of the Porsche 911 has always been regarded as the best of the “air-cooled” era.  These cars perfectly blend classic Porsche performance with modest creature comforts.  Plus, the 993 produced even more power with the introduction of the VarioRam engine.  Horsepower was at 282 while the car weighed about 3,000 lbs.  Paired with a manual transmission, it’s the perfect recipe for balanced analog Porsche driving.

This Porsche was built in March 1996 and sold new on July 30th, 1996 by Vasek Polak Porsche + Audi of Hermosa Beach, California.  It was ordered with the following factory options:

  • US Emissions
  • CD-radio Becker Porsche CDR-210
  • Hi-Fi Sound Package with 10 Speakers
  • Porsche Floor Mats – Cashmere
  • 17” Wheels (Cup II)
  • Automatic Speed Control (Cruise Control)
  • 8-Way Electric Seats (Left & Right)
  • Wheel Caps with Porsche Crest
  • Power Sunroof

The MSRP was $68,522, approximately $137,161 in today’s dollars.

The first owner was Martin Cohen of Rancho Palos Verdes, California.  He used this 993 as his daily driver and kept it for 8 years/70k miles.  He serviced it regularly at either Vasek Polak, McKenna, or Pacific Porsche (his local Porsche dealers).  Besides routine oil services and standard maintenance, highlights of other work performed during his care include:

In April of 2012, Christopher sold this 993 to Brian Terry of Henderson Nevada with 89,230 miles.  Prior to the sale, Callas Rennsport did a pre-purchased inspection and verified the condition of this 993.  In 2004, there was an accident with a motorcycle shortly after Christopher purchased the car.  The damage was surficial, which involved replacing the right front fender and repainting the front nose.  Callas confirmed that the work done was proper and no negative impact with the damage being only superficial and nothing structural.  He further confirmed the following during the inspection:

  • Gearbox/shifting/clutch all good
  • Engine sounds good and feels strong
  • SAI (secondary air injection) system test results were very good
  • Wheels are true hollow spoke turbo twists
  • Vehicle lowered properly on factory sport springs
  • Upgraded front & rear sway bars with factory RS parts
  • Engine compression and leak down test results good/great

Brian only kept his 993 for 18 months/4k miles.  During his care, he performed a major service including spark plugs and belts.  Brian sold this 993 on September 7th, 2013 with 92,842 miles to Chris B. of Laguna Beach, California.  Chris kept this 911 for the next 8 years and added another 7k miles.  As an enthusiast who enjoyed driving, he was fastidious with service as it was regularly maintained by top local independent Porsche specialists.  Highlights of the work performed during his care include:

The exterior of this 993 is decent with some signs of age.  The paint is original from the A-pillar to the rear.  The front nose (hood, fenders, and bumper) was repainted in 2004 due to the aforementioned motorcycle incident.  The hood paint has developed some clear coat cracks over the last 20 years due to poor prep work.  There is a 1cm paint chip on the top of the left front fender, which has been touched up in addition to other minor areas that needed to be touched up.  The front bumper has paint chips/scrapes as well with a slight bit of warping, which is common for this style bumper.  However, the panel fitment is excellent and the doors close with that classic “ping.”  The sunroof felt is showing some age and needs to be replaced down the road.  Our detail expert has carefully glued it down.  The glass is in good shape with no major cracks or chips.  The factory stampings are present.  The windshield was recently replaced with the correct factory replacement glass and seals ($2,000).  The factory hollow spoke Turbo-twist wheels have been refurbished and are in great shape with no major  flaws with only light rash on the left rear wheel.  They are wearing Michelin tires.  The rear tires were installed in April of 2024 and have less than 1k miles on them and are at near full tread depth.  The front tires were installed in September of 2021 and have 14k miles on them and just over a third of life remaining.  There is a slight lip on the front rotors and a bit more lip on the rear rotors.  All the exterior lights work.

The interior is very nice and in decent shape with typical wear from a 28-year-old Porsche with 114k miles.  The front leather seats have been dyed due to some typical cracking.  They look much better and there are no tears.  The heaviest wear is on the exit bolsters.  The rear seats look unused and fresh.  The rear parcel shelf vinyl has a tear on it near where it meets the rear glass.  The speaker covers on the parcel shelf have some light discoloration.  The headliner has no tears or rips with no sagging issues, including the sunroof panel.  The sun visors are also in good shape.  The carpet has no signs of excessive wear and some light discoloration from typical use.  Newer driver floor mats have been installed.  The door panels are in excellent condition with none of the typical door pocket warping.  The driver door threshold rubber has a typical tear where a foot would drag over it and the rubber wiring boot in the door hinge area has a tear.  The driver door stay has been repaired/rewelded and should last with careful use.  The interior lights work.  The dash has no cracks or warping issues.  All the gauges work, including the clock.  The factory Becker radio works and has been refurbished to include Bluetooth connectivity through the FM tuner.  The power windows, mirrors, and sunroof all work.  The A/C system blows cold.  The Max A/C button doesn’t work but can be turned to max with the knob.  The glove box doesn’t open all the way, which is typical for 993 glove box doors.

This 993 drives incredibly tight and seems to almost have more power even though it’s stock.  This example has been driven and serviced regularly.  It starts easily on the first try and holds an even idle.  The power is strong throughout the rev range with no hesitation.  The brakes have an excellent bite with no fading or pulling.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding and the clutch engages properly with no slipping.  The handling is crisp and responsive while compliant on uneven road surfaces.

This 993 passes California’s smog test and has current registration paid to October of 2024.

This 993 C2 includes 2 main keys with 2 immobilizer remotes (updated key fob remotes), owner’s manuals with the vinyl case, original radio card, original maintenance booklet with stamps, original window sticker, 3-ring binder of all service records from new, wheel lock socket key, tire pressure gauge, extra immobilizer remote battery with tool, tool kit, jack, space saver spare, and air compressor.

**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud.  All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.

I’m a sucker for a 3-ring binder of records.

When this 993 arrived with a thick 3-ring binder full of service receipts going back to new, I could barely contain myself.

I don’t care how many previous owners a Porsche has had, but rather how well those owners took care of it.

From its delivery day at Vasek Polak to today, this 911 has always been driven, serviced, and garaged.

The first couple of owners used it as their daily driver for 14 years and 90k miles.

There was no “odometer fear.”  They just enjoyed it.

Each owner serviced it religiously and it never sat unused, which seems to be the death sentence for many 993s these days as their values continue to climb.

In fact, one of the previous owners even entered it in the Silver State Classic Open Road Challenge.  This rally event allows owners to drive at 100mph+ on public roads in a controlled environment.

Perhaps it has a few more flaws than a never-driven, low-mile example.  However, it drives better than most.

This Porsche just loves to run and hopefully, the next caretaker will continue the driving tradition.
