The second-generation Porsche 911/997 got several updates and improvements.  This included a new more powerful engine thanks to direct injection.  The 3.6-liter Carrera engine produced 345 horsepower, similar to the previous 997.1 S model.  Also, the IMS bearing was eliminated from this engine design.  Furthermore, the bore scoring issues of the earlier models were significantly minimized.  However, due to the introduction of the PDK (dual clutch) transmission and a global economic recession, the production number of manual transmission coupes was at an all-time low.

This 911 was built on June 15, 2009, and was sold new by Walter’s Porsche of Riverside, California on January 20th, 2010.  It was optioned with the following:

  • Meteor Grey Metallic
  • Black Leather
  • Power Comfort Seats with Driver Memory
  • Heated front seats
  • 19” Carrera S II Wheels
  • Bluetooth Phone Interface
  • Navigation Module for PCM
  • Bose High End Sound Package
  • XM Radio
  • Floor Mats in Interior Color
  • Universal Audio Interface

The MSRP was $88,655, approximately $130,000 in today’s money.

The first owner was from the Pacific Palisades, California.  He kept this Carrera for nearly 3 years and 22k miles.  During this owner’s care, it was serviced regularly at Beverly Hills Porsche.  Besides routine maintenance, a new fuel pump was installed.  He traded it back to Walter’s for a Panamera (his wife had a baby and needed something more practical) with 22,791 miles.  Walter’s put the car through their CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) inspection process and sold it to a local Orange County mature couple on August 29th, 2012, with 22,817 miles.

This couple has been PCA Orange Coast Region members for decades and is very active in the local Porsche community/Concours scene.  We’ve been fortunate to help them sell and buy several Porsches over the years and all their cars are spectacular.  They were fastidious with their maintenance and detailing schedule.  They kept this 911 for 3 years/10k miles.  They used it to attend PCA activities as well as driving it to Monterey for Car Week.  During their care, they serviced the car regularly at either Newport Porsche or a local independent Porsche specialist.  Highlights of their care during their 3-year/11k mile ownership include the following:

  • Custom car cover and car bra (9/12)
  • Battery replaced (12/12 @ 24,033 miles)
  • Oil service and inspection (6/13 @ 25,907 miles)
  • 30k mile service / replace passenger window, motor, & seal (12/13 @ 30,434 miles)
  • Detail, dent removal, wheel well cleaning, touch up paint (3/14 @ 31,895 miles)
  • Battery replaced (10/14 @ 33,000 miles)

This 2nd owner created a 3-ring binder documenting this Porsche’s entire service life, which is included for the next owner.

We helped these fellow PCA members sell this Carrera on January 30th, 2015, with 34,054 miles to the current owner who is a professor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.  For nearly a decade, this current owner has only added another 10k miles.  It was only used on fair-weather days and was always garaged.  Highlights of this owner’s regular services include:

  • Passed pre-purchase inspection at TruSpeed (1/15 @ 34,051 miles)
  • New front tires (4/15 @ 34k miles)
  • Oil service (4/15 @ 34,304 miles)
  • Oil service, replace washer on water pump plug, coolant flush (11/17 @ 40,421 miles)
  • Rear Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and 4-wheel alignment (11/17 @ 40,473 miles)
  • All 4 brake pads and rotors, brake flush, oil service (10/20 @ 40,421 miles)
  • Most recent oil service (5/24 @ 44,238 miles)
  • Front Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and 4-wheel alignment (6/24 @ 44,372 miles)

Recently, this 911 had the paint corrected and ceramic coated.  Upon delivery, our detailer did a decontamination cleaning to remove dirt while preserving the ceramic coating.  Our detailer then used a ceramic booster to further add life to the coating.  Lastly, the underside was steam cleaned.

Unfortunately, the current owner is not driving this 911 as much as he used to due to other cars he owns, time, and weather limitations.  Since we knew the car since 2012 as well as the previous owners, he shipped the car back to us to help find the next caretaker.

The exterior still looks great as I remember it did in 2015.  There are minimal signs of use with no major chips, scratches, or dents.  During this owner’s care, he had a mishap where the car rolled down his driveway with the driver open.  The door hit a tree in his yard which required a new door skin and inside door panel as well.  The door was repainted and at the same time, they repainted the hood to correct some minor paint chips.  The damage was strictly superficial and repaired with all factory parts.  The quality of the work was done at a high level and visually there is no difference.  The glass is in good shape with no major chips or scratches and the proper factory stampings are visible.  All the exterior lights/lenses are in good shape and they all work.  The factory 19” Carrera S wheels have no major curb rash and are wearing Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.  The fronts are nearly new with full life remaining.  The rears were installed 7 years/4k miles ago.  They have about 75% life remaining and no signs of age or excessive wear, indicating proper storage and use.

The interior looks exactly as I remember it.  There are minimal signs of use.  The front leather seats have no tears or rips, and just minor light exit bolster wear.  The rear seats look unused.  The headliner has no stains, rips, or sagging issues.  The door panels, carpet, and dash all look great with no signs of wear or use.  All the gauges work properly as do the power windows, mirrors, and sunroof.  The stock radio works properly, and the A/C system blows cold.

This 997.2 Carrera drives very tight and still feels like new.  It starts easily and the power delivery is surprisingly strong throughout the rev range.  The handling is precise and confidence-inspiring on turns yet compliant on uneven road surfaces.  The transmission shifts smoothly through the rev range and the clutch engages properly with no slipping.  The brakes have an excellent initial bite with no fading or pulling.  This Carrera is surprisingly comfortable on longer drives, yet plenty engaging/analog on twisty backroads.  Since so few manual rear-wheel drive 997.2 coupes were built for the U.S., it’s getting difficult to find low-mile, well-cared unmodified examples.

The DME (vehicle computer, which logs engine revs) was checked and there were no significant overrevs.  In fact, it only hit redline once and that was nearly 14k miles/4 years ago.

Level 1 (redline – 7,300 rpm): 0.38 seconds total, which is once in its life.

Level 2: 0

Level 3: 0

Level 4: 0

Level 5: 0

Level 6: 0

Furthermore, this Carrera has averaged only 29 mph over its entire life.

This vehicle is stock and passes California’s strict smog/emissions test.

This Carrera comes with 2 main keys, the original owner’s manuals in the vinyl case, original maintenance booklet with option stickers/dealer stamps, factory tool kit, wheel locks with socket key, Porsche window sticker (copy), service history from new in a 3-ring binder, car bra, and a car cover.
