The 993 variation of the Porsche 911 has always been regarded as the best of the great “air-cooled” era.  These cars perfectly blend classic Porsche performance with modest creature comforts.  Plus, the 993 produced even more power with the introduction of the VarioRam engine.  Horsepower was at 282 while the car weighed about 3,000 lbs.  Paired with a manual transmission it’s the perfect recipe for air-cooled fun.
Porsche was built in September of 1996 and sold new on May 12th, 1997, by Hoffman Porsche + Audi of East Hartford, Connecticut.  It was ordered with the following factory options:
  • US Emissions
  • Locking Differential 40%
  • Automatic Limited Slip Differential
  • Compact Disc Becker Porsche CDR-210
  • 17” Cup Wheels
  • 8-Way Electric Comfort Seats – Left & Right
  • Wheel Caps with Colored Porsche Crests
  • Automatic Speed Control (Cruise Control)
  • Power Sunroof

The first owner was from New York City, NY.  He only used it in dry/fair weather conditions and always garaged it.  After the first 5 years in New York, he relocated to Pasadena, California in 2001 and brought this Porsche with him.  He owned this car for 8 years and added 18k miles.  He traded it into a local Orange County dealer who quickly sold it on October 26th, 2004 with 18,573 miles to a local OC enthusiast.  This owner kept this 911 for 2 years and added 8k miles.  He sold it to the current OC owner, his friend/neighbor, on September 11th, 2006, with 26,748 miles.  For the past 19 years, the current owner has only added 8k miles.  He used it mostly as a weekend cruiser.  This owner serviced it primarily at Vision Motorsports or Cape Auto, both well-respected independent Porsche specialists.

At the last service, less than 500 miles ago), the mechanic noted the clutch pedal was slightly stiff.  He said that this might be an early sign of clutch wear even. However, the clutch still engages properly with no slipping.

Upon receiving this 993 for sale, we had the following services performed:

  • Fresh oil service
  • Check brake fluid (tested ok)
  • Repair driver door stay
  • Patch chip in windshield
  • Full detail
  • Paint correction
  • Remove old window tint
  • Minor paint touch up on small chips
  • Steam clean underside and engine
  • Install new Carrera badge on deck lid
It’s clear that this 993 has been lightly used throughout its life and always garaged.  There are no visible signs of any prior damage or misuse.  The exterior paint is in excellent condition and appears to be all original with validating paint meter readings.  There are a few minor nicks that have been professionally touched up.  All the exterior lights are in good shape and all work.  There is some typical light discoloration on the headlights and rear reflector.  The rubber seals show minimal age or cracking.  All the glass appears to be original, including the windshield, and wearing the proper factory stampings.  The windshield has an older chip that was repaired 20 years ago.  The factory Cup II wheels have no significant curb rash and are wearing Michelin Pilot Sport tires installed 5 years/500 miles ago.  They are near full tread with no signs of age.  The front brake pads are at about 50% life with some lip on the rotors and the rear pads are at 75% life.
The interior is equally as nice and original with light signs of use that are commensurate with the miles and age.  The front leather seats have no cracks or tears with just some minimal exit bolster wear on the driver seat.  The rear seats look unused.  The headliner has no issues including the sunroof panel.  The interior headliner lights work.  The sunvisors also look fresh.  The carpet has no stains or heavy wear marks.  The door panels look near new with just the slightest warping of the storage pocket lid.  The dash has no cracks and all the gauges work, including the clock.  The power seats, windows, mirrors, and sunroof all operate properly.  The original radio does not power on. The repair shop believes it’s the radio fuse in the back of the unit, which has failed previously.  The A/C system was recently serviced and blows cold.
This 993 starts easily and feels fresh.  It holds an even idle and the power is strong throughout the rev range.  The handling is crisp and responsive yet compliant enough to handle most road imperfections.  The transmission shifts smoothly through the gears with no grinding.  The clutch engages a slight bit high and is also a bit stiff, but doesn’t slip.  The brakes have an excellent initial bite with no fading or pulling.
This Porsche has current California registration valid to March of 2026 and it passes California’s emissions/smog test.
This 993 C2 includes 2 main keys with 2 immobilizer remotes, extra remote batteries, radio code card, owner’s manuals/books with vinyl case, original maintenance booklet with stamps, over 2 decades of service receipts, tool kit, jack with cloth drawstring sack, wheel locks with key, space saver spare, and air compressor.

I want to drive an air-cooled 911 on a rally.

But it must be comfortable for long distances and have cold air-conditioning.

Plus, it needs an easy clutch so I can use it as a part-time daily driver.

Oh, and I’d like a coffee maker with massage seats if possible.

It’s alarming how frequently I get requests like these.

Minus the barista and masseuse, a 993 might be the answer.

I just got back from a vintage tour with Driving While Awesome (DWA).  Their “Classic Rally” is a 1,500-mile driving adventure specifically for 1999 and older cars.

Many rally events focus on decades-older cars, which is why I like the DWA ones.

This time, I took our 944 Turbo S, which was also quite capable for the twisty bits as well as comfy on the long freeway transits.

As good as it was, I did kinda miss the 911 steering feel.

“There [really] is no substitute [for a 911].”
