The 993 variation of the Porsche 911 has always been regarded as the best of the great “air-cooled” era.  These cars had the perfect blend of classic Porsche performance with modest creature comforts.  Plus, with the introduction of the VarioRam engine in 1996, the 993 produced even more usable power.  The normally aspirated, wide-body 993s have been growing in popularity and demand.  In particular, the last air-cooled year for the C2S only saw 993 units produced for North America as a 1998 model.

This C2S was built on September 3rd, 1997 and delivered new on September 26th, 1997 at the Porsche factory as a Tourist Delivery Porsche.  It was special ordered through Porsche of Newport Beach, California.  Although the wide-body Porsches were nicely equipped with many standard options, this one was tastefully ordered with the following additional factory options:

  • US standard emissions
  • Motor sound package
  • Limited Slip Differential with 40% lock
  • Automatic Braking Differential (Traction control)
  • CD Radio Becker Porsche CDR-210
  • Hi-Fi Sound Package w/Speakers
  • On Board Computer
  • Xenon Headlights
  • Delete Model Designation
  • Technic Package
  • Heated Front Seats
  • 17” Wheels w/Cup Design (Upgraded to 18” Solid Spoke Turbo Twist Wheels)
  • Stainless Steel Exhaust Pipes
  • Metal Door Sill Model Insignia
  • Aluminum/Leather Shifter & Brake Handle
  • Automatic speed control/cruise control
  • Electric sunroof

The original MSRP was $67,015, which is equivalent to $139,837 in today’s dollars.

993 M030/Euro springs by H&R were installed by a prior owner for the Euro ride-height look.

The first owner was from Santa Monica, California.  He took tourist delivery of this C2S and ended up driving it around Germany for a couple of weeks/700 miles before having it shipped back to SoCal and delivered through the selling Porsche dealer in Newport Beach.  This owner kept this Porsche for the next 12 years and added nearly 42k miles.  During this owner’s care, he had it regularly serviced at his local Porsche dealer.  The first 7 years were at Porsche of Beverly Hills, California and then he moved to Florida and had it serviced for the next 5 years at Suncoast Porsche in Sarasota, Florida.  There are over 37 service entries on Carfax®.  Besides routine oil services/fluid flushes, this owner had the dealer service/flush the air conditioning system as well as a new expansion valve and receiver/dryer on 11/05 @ 37,685 miles.

It was sold in June 2009 with 42k miles to the next owner from Mequon, Wisconsin.  This owner kept this 993 C2S for a year and added another 2k miles before selling it to the next owner from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August of 2010 with 45k miles.  This owner kept the car for the next 6 years and added 6k miles.  During this owner’s care, he continued the annual service program the previous owners had done.  Besides routine services, he had the clutch replaced along with the flywheel and a major service on 1/15 @ 50,524 miles.  Also, in January of 2012, this owner ran over something on the highway that caused about $8k of damage, which included replacing the front bumper, some paintwork on the left front fender, and the front part of the left rocker panel.  They blended/cleared into the left-rear quarter panel.  Also, the front control arm and other left front suspension parts were replaced.  It’s noted in Carfax® as “damage/accident report.”  The work was top-notch, and there are no visible signs of prior damage.  It was fairly minor.  It was then sold to a SoCal dealer principal who kept the car for about a year and added another 1k miles before being sold to the current SoCal owner.

The current owner is from the South Bay area of Los Angeles and purchased this 993 in May of 2017 with 52,865 miles.  For the past 9½ years, this owner has only added 1,600 miles of light weekend use and cars & coffee gatherings.  Highlights of service during this owner’s care include:

Upon receiving this Porsche, we had a complete detail, including paint polish, performed.  The wheels were removed, and the inside of the fenders, underside, and engine bay were steam cleaned.  Also, we had our local Porsche specialist perform a fresh oil service, check the brake fluid (good – no moisture), install a new Interstate AGM battery, replace a Xenon headlight bulb, and perform a light inspection.  He found the car to be in very good shape with no signs of any significant damage.  He didn’t find anything serious from the aforementioned damage in 2012 from running over debris on the road.

The exterior of this Carrera S is in superb condition and indicative of a low-mileage, garaged example that was well-cared for.  The paint was recently corrected, and it has a deep shine to it.  The front end and left rear quarter have been repainted.  There are some very minor paint flaws near the passenger side headlight.  The rest of the paint appears to be original.  Paint meter reading photos are in the gallery.  The glass appears to be original and is wearing the proper factory stampings.  There are no significant chips or scratches.  The light lenses and trim are in great shape with no fading or cracking.  The headlight lenses look new.  The 18” Turbo Twist wheels have no major curb rash and are wearing older Continental tires.  Despite showing no visible signs of age, with no cracking and still 75% tread life remaining, they should be replaced due to age.  The rear brake pads are at a third of their life, and the front brake pads are near 75% life.  The brake rotors have a slight lip.

The interior is exceptional and further proof of the mileage and careful life this C2S has had.  The leather seats have no tears and minimal bolster wear.  The rear seats look unused.  The headliner has no tears, and the headliner lights work.  The sunvisors are also in good shape.  The carpet has no stains or heavy wear marks.  The door panels are in good shape with just slight door pocket warping.  The driver threshold rubber has the typical light wear.  The dash has no cracks or warping, and all the gauges work properly, including the clock.  The A/C system blows cold, and the power sunroof, windows, and mirrors all work.  The cruise control system works as well.

This 993 C2S starts easily and holds an even idle.  The power is strong throughout the rev range with no hesitation.  The car tracks straight and handles well even on uneven road surfaces.  Some fresh tires will further enhance the handling as well.  The brakes have good initial bite with no fading or pulling.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding or slipping.  The clutch engages properly.  This 993 drives very tight and solid with no significant rattles or issues.  Whether you’re doing daily driving, weekend cruising, or backroad adventures, this 993 can easily and comfortably handle the variety of tasks.

This 993 passes CA smog and will have current CA registration for the next owner (if a CA resident)

This Porsche comes with owner’s manuals, an original maintenance booklet with dealer stamps, a build/option sheet, 1 key with immobilizer key fob, 1 new uncut key with key head, a tool kit, a space saver spare tire, a jack, many service receipts, and a set of custom Cocomats (4).

“No, you hang up first.” – Ross (TV show Friends)

You know that thing you do when you’re talking on the phone with someone you just started dating?

You hang up the phone…

Then wait a few seconds.

“No, you hang up first.”

(This usually continues for annoyingly too long)

I’m doing something similar with this 993.

I’ve been driving this C2S for the past couple of days, and every time I put it in the garage, I turn the lights off…pause…

Then I turn them back on for one more look.

I’ve even started backing it in, so I see that voluptuous rear end first.

For those who know me, I’m not exactly a 993 guy. I’ve always been more interested in other Porsches.

This is getting embarrassing.

Maybe I’m wrong?  It’s hard to admit.

The market has known something I’ve been stubbornly refusing to admit for years.

These wide-body 993s are beautiful.

Apparently, I’m falling for them.  Crap!

I’m not ready to call myself a 993 guy, even though my garage lights disagree.
