When the Porsche GT3 was launched as a new model in the late 90’s, it was an overwhelming success.  All GT3s have since become among the most sought-after modern Porsche collectibles.  The famous Mezger engines were the foundation of all the 996 and 997 GT3s.  This motor is known for being one of the best engines ever built.  It is incredibly reliable and able to handle extended periods of high RPMs.  Only 917 997.1 GT3s came to the U.S., and of those, only 74 were in Arctic Silver

This example was built on December 1st,  2006 and sold new by McKenna Porsche of Norwalk, California on January 17th, 2007.  This example was ordered with the following factory options:

  • Sport Seats
  • Natural Leather Dark Grey
  • Ceramic Composite Brakes – PCCB
  • (converted to Brembo Steel – we do not have original ceramic rotors)
  • Sport Chrono Package
  • Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package
  • Arctic Silver Metallic
  • Floor Mats – Interior Color

The MSRP was $122,815, which is equivalent to $197,790 in today’s money.

The first two owners only kept the car for less than a year and 2k miles combined.  During that first year, it was serviced a couple of times at a local Porsche dealer.  The next owner only had the car for just under a year/2k miles.  This owner serviced it twice at the Porsche dealer, including a 7,500-mile service at 3,982 miles on 8/08.  The next owner kept this GT3 for 2 years and added 7k miles.  It was serviced twice before being sold to an enthusiast from Atlanta, Georgia.  This owner kept the car for over 5 years and added 10k miles.  It was serviced 7 times at Jim Ellis Porsche.  It was sold on September 25th, 2015 with 22,769 miles to an enthusiast from Orange County, California.  This owner kept the car for a few years and added 7k.  During this owner’s stewardship, he serviced it with BBi Autosport in Huntington Beach, California.  BBi was in the process of performing modifications for this owner when the owner asked them to help sell it.  BBi founder, Betim Berisha, helped sell it to the next enthusiast from Torrance, California in February of 2018 with 29,295 miles.  This owner agreed to work with Betim to complete the work BBi had already started.

This recent owner mostly used this GT3 as a fun weekend/backroad car for the next 6 years/13k miles.  He took it to a handful of driver’s education events (HPDE).  During his ownership, BBi continued to maintain it.  Highlights of the services and improvements included:

  • Fresh services shortly after purchase (1/18 @ 29,290 miles)
    • RS 4.0L lightweight clutch/flywheel package

We sold this GT3 to a local Newport Beach, California enthusiast/friend of ours on April 16th, 2024 with 42,344 miles.  For the past couple of years, this owner has been traveling out of the country and has only driven the car a few times to local C&C events.  He has had his collection manager drive the car 10 miles periodically to keep it exercised.  Although it’s only been a thousand miles, it’s due for an oil service based on time.  Since he is now spending more time out of the country, he’s asked us to help find the next caretaker.

The exterior of this GT3 is in very good condition with minimal signs of wear.  The paint looks great and has no major chips or scratches.  The entire front end is protected with PPF.  The hood and bumper were repainted due to rock chips just prior to this owner purchasing the car as part of the agreement.  The majority of the paint is original and verified with a paint meter.  A small issue with a jack damaged the underside of the rocker on the left rear, which required a small area to be painted and blended into the driver door and left rear quarter panel.  Visually, there is no noticeable difference.  The car is very straight and dry as inspected by BBi.  There are no signs of abuse or heavy track use.  The glass is in good shape and original except for the windshield, which was replaced several years ago.  There is a 2” crack on the passenger side on the edge and is not visible from inside the car (and barely from outside).  The plastic headlight and fog light lenses have some light superficial scratches due to age but are not noticeable.  The front rubber/plastic spoiler lip has some light wear.  They are replaceable from FVD for under $200.  The factory wheels have been powder-coated in a semi-gloss finish and show minimal signs of wear.  They are wrapped in Toyo Proxes tires that were installed 5-years/2,800 miles ago.  They have about half their life remaining.  The brakes have about half-life remaining.

The interior is also in good condition with no heavy wear signs.  The leather sport seats have no signs of significant wear and just some very light wrinkling on the exit bolsters.  There are no tears, rips, or issues with the stitching.  A Rennline Halon fire extinguisher is installed on the roll bar with a billet aluminum quick-release mount.  The rear carpet has a couple of holes from a prior mount.  The roll bar is bolt in and no drilling was ever used to install it.  The Alcantara headliner is in good shape with no sagging or staining.  The carpet looks great, and the floor mats appear to be recently replaced.  The door panels have no stains or heavy wear marks.  The dash is perfect.  The steering wheel was replaced with another 997 steering wheel with an airbag.  All the gauges appear to work properly.  The sport-chrono clock’s small minute hand has fallen off, which is very common.  The factory radio, air-conditioning system, power windows, sunroof, and side mirrors all work as they should.  There is some light/typical wear on the temperature and fan speed controls.  The factory expandable “hand-cuff” style cup holders work as they should.

A DME report was just run, which shows how often the car has been driven at or above redline.  This example was extremely clean, with only 0.04 seconds at redline (level 1) over its entire life.  There were zeros on levels 2 through 6.

The car does pass California’s strict smog test.

This GT3 comes with 1-key, printed MSRP/build sheet, tool kit, tire pressure gauge, tire repair kit, air compressor, Cobb software update module, Rennline halon fire extinguisher with billet aluminum mount, Porsche under-seat fire extinguisher, Porsche-branded oil quart holder with new quart of Mobil 1 oil, and recent service records.

Remember when GT3s were cheap?

It feels like yesterday these cars were “just used Porsches” that you bought to drive for fun.

That was a decade ago.  Like anything else that’s special and low-production, word eventually gets out.

Or is it because new GT3s are now approaching $350,000 after dealer markup?

Suddenly a 20-year-old 997.1 doesn’t seem quite so crazy.

Especially without sounding too much like an old geezer, when they aren’t making them like this anymore:

Mezger flat-six engine.

415 naturally aspirated hp.

Six-speed manual.

No turbos. No PDK. No hybrid.

8,400 rpm of raw analog debauchery.

Combine this tasty recipe with the low supply of ingredients (only 917 U.S. examples built) and there’s no way this was going to stay a secret for very long.

So is this one expensive? Sure.

But $350K for a new GT3?

That’s not sticker shock.

That’s a hostage situation.
