The 993 variation of the Porsche 911 has always been regarded as the best of the great “air-cooled” era.  The model years offered were from 1995 through 1998.  Only a handful of the ‘98s were offered in the U.S. as production on the next generation 911 (996) was already underway and being delivered.  In particular, only 298 Carrera 4S (C4S) cars for the last model year were delivered to North America.  The wide body 993s have been growing in popularity and demand.

This C4S was built on September 26th, 1996, and delivered new on November 5th, 1996 by Niello Porsche of Sacramento, California.  Although the C4S Porsches were nicely equipped with many standard options like a sunroof and 18” light alloy wheels,  this one was ordered with the following:

  • US Standard Emissions
  • Wheel spokes painted in body color
  • Wheel caps painted in car color
  • Leather covered instrument rings and painted dials
  • Motor sound package
  • Rear window wiper
  • 8-way electric seats (left and right)
  • Cruise control
  • Hi-Fi sound package with 10 speakers
  • Litronic (xenon) headlamps
  • Sunroof
  • CD/FM-radio Becker Porsche CR-210

The MSRP was $82,349, which is $155,452 in today’s dollars.

The first owner was from Reno, Nevada.  He only kept the car a couple of years before trading it back in to Niello Porsche in Sacramento in February of 1999.  The Porsche dealer certified it and sold it on March 9th, 1999 with 6,867 miles to Sean Smith of Los Angeles, California.  Sean owned this 993 for 4 years and 53k miles.  It was his daily driver and he was extremely proud of it.  He was always on top of service needs as well as mild enhancements.  He primarily used either his local Porsche dealer or Aurel & Don’s Independent Porsche Service for maintenance.  During his care he performed the following:

  • Proper interval services (minor and major)
  • Refinish original wheels in correct finish
  • Rebuild alternator (2/00 @ 23,215 miles)
  • Clutch kit with lightened flywheel (7/01 @ 42,208 miles)
  • New A/C evaporator and system service (8/02 @ 54,323 miles)
  • Carrera 2S “split grill” decklid insert
  • Aluminum insignia door sill plates
  • Bilstein PSS9 suspension system
  • Tech-Art sport exhaust
  • Carbon fiber strut tower brace
  • Euro brake ducts, turn signals, and reflector lamps
  • Aluminum pedals
  • Front bumper lower driveway-protection bar

Sean sold this C4S on October 10th, 2003 with 60,560 miles to John Velasco of Arcadia, California.  Sean was John’s client for whatever business they were in and he knew the car since Sean bought it.  He still did a pre-purchase inspection, which it passed.  John used this 993 as a weekend/PCA events car and kept it for the 3 years and 12k miles.  He started keeping a log book of fuel fill-ups and services as well as all  receipts for work done.  Highlights of maintenance performed during his ownership include:

  • Regular minor and major services
  • Replaced immobilizer control unit at dealer (6/06 @ 68,829 miles)
  • Timing chain covers and valve cover gaskets (10/06 @ 69,987 miles)

John sold this Porsche on April 2nd, 2007 with 71,953 miles to Jay Stuart of Bellevue, Washington.  Jay kept the car for 3 years and added another 23k miles.  He continued to log fuel fill-ups and maintenance in the log book while keeping duplicate hard copy receipts.  He continued the fastidious service regiment.  Highlights of work done during his care include:

  • Regular interval services
  • Tie rod ends and steering rack boots (10/07 @ 74,976 miles)

Jay sold this C4S to the current owner on December 3rd, 2010 with 95,254 miles.  The current owner is a long-time Porsche enthusiast who lives in Santa Barbara, California.  He is the longest owner thus far, having enjoyed the car for the past 12 years and 35k miles.  He has primarily used this 911 as a fun weekend toy to enjoy his local backroads.  He continued to enter services and fuel fill ups in the log book as well as keeping all receipts.  He has also done more service and refurbishment than any prior owner.  The majority of the maintenance done was at Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara.  Schneider is probably the best air-cooled Porsche shop in the area.  Highlights of services include:

  • Regular interval minor and major services
  • Cooling fan hub, voltage regulator and belt (2/11 @ 96,443 miles)
  • Replace front brakes/pads and oil service (10/11 @ 103,424 miles)

*This 993 is being sold with the stock wheels installed as well as the original seats.  The GMG wheels and factory-heated carbon fiber sport seat buckets are available for an additional fee.

The exterior is in excellent condition and clearly well cared for and always garaged.  The paint is in very good shape and much of it is original.  The entire front nose of the car (hood, front fenders, front bumper, and side mirrors) is covered in PPF (paint protection film).   It was installed when the current owner purchased the car.  It’s starting to discolor slightly.  The original electric rear spoiler was removed and an RS-style fixed rear spoiler was installed onto the original deck lid.  No holes were drilled and the original parts can be swapped back.  There’s a slight discoloration on the deck lid as it was repainted when the wing was installed.  The glass is in good shape and is all original with the proper factory stampings.  The windshield has a chip that has been professionally repaired.  Also, there is rash from normal use.  There is a scratch on the rear bumper on the driver side almost near the bottom edge.  The exterior lights all work.  The GMG wheels are in good shape with minor rash along a few places on the edge of the lip.  They are wearing Michelin Pilot Sport tires that were installed in 2016.  The fronts have more than half-life remaining and the rears are near the wear bars and will need to be replaced soon.  The front brakes have about a third life left and the rears are at about half-life.

The interior is also very nice and much cleaner than cars I’ve seen with half the miles.  The leather/carbon hard-back sport seats are near new and look fresh*.  They are available for purchase.  The car will come with the stock leather seats reinstalled.  The original seats are in good shape with no tears or cracking.  The rear seats are in good shape as well.  The headliner has no tears.  The carpet has no stains or signs of heavy wear.  The door panels look great with minor warping of the door pocket flip-tops.  The driver door stay was recently repaired and works properly.  The dash has no cracks or warping.  The gauges all work, including the clock.  The power windows, mirrors, and sunroof all work.  The A/C system blows cold and the upgraded Porsche Classic Bluetooth radio works properly.

This Carrera 4S drives fantastically and is very tight.  It starts easily and holds an even idle.  The throttle response is snappy and once warmed up, it pulls much harder through the revs than a stock one.  I was pleasantly surprised and the power and responsiveness.  The original muffler was modified and as a result sounds great.  It is milder than the Fister design, but still provides a healthy growl when accelerating while minimizing droning at highway speeds.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no slipping or grinding.  The recently upgraded GT3 clutch/pressure plate has a stiffer pedal action than stock.  However, the engagement is much quicker and it really helps with acceleration.  The brakes have an immediate bite with no fading or pulling.  The handling is crisp and precise without compromising normal driving.  It’s very smooth and tracks straight on open highway driving.

Although recently registered in Montana, this 911 has spent the majority of its life in California and passes CA smog.

This 993 comes with 2 keys/immobilizer fobs, owner’s manuals, original window sticker, mileage/service log book with records dating back to 2003, mostly all receipts dating back to 1999, original window sticker, tool kit, jack, air compressor, space saver spare, original electric rear spoiler wing, original 18” turbo twist wheels (on older tires that need replacing) and original leather 8-way electric seats.

*GMG WC wheels and heated carbon sport buckets are available for purchase separately and are not included with the listed price of the vehicle.  This C4S comes with the stock wheels installed and the stock leather seats installed.
