In 1951, Volkswagen introduced a special bus or van with 23 windows and a large fabric sliding sunroof. Initially, these were developed as tour buses for the alps, but they quickly became popular in the U.S. and nicknamed “Samba.” Production continued on the 23-window through 1963. In 1964, the 21-window continued production with all Sambas ending by the end of 1966 model year.
This VW was built on January 24th, 1962, left the factory on January 28th, 1962 and was then delivered to San Francisco, California. It was ordered with the following:
- 376 North American Equipment/U.S.
- 530 Large Step to Cargo Area
- 241 Cargo Doors Right, Left Hand Drive, Full Middle Seat
Originally this Samba was delivered in Beige Grey over Sealing Wax Red. However, during the restoration, the color was changed to the current combination, which is correct for that model year.
The previous owner is a local Orange County, California enthusiast and collector who commissioned a full restoration of this bus. It was completely stripped down to the bare metal and every part of the vehicle was restored. The restoration was completed in 2013. Initially, it was thought to have the original numbers matching motor, however, it has been confirmed that it was not the original motor through the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen Certificate. It does currently have a correct model year 1200cc/40hp motor. During the restoration, this bus was converted to a 12-Volt system using a Porsche 912 generator. Upon completion, it was sold to the current owner on August 20th, 2013 with less than 10 miles on the restoration.
The current owner is a long time air-cooled Porsche enthusiast who wanted something to enjoy on weekend afternoons with his family. Shortly after he took delivery of this bus, he accidentally missed a shift and threw a rod. This caused significant damage to the crankshaft and case. So, another correct model motor was sourced and it was completely rebuilt including a few other service items. Highlights of this build include:
- Line bore engine case
- Connecting rods
- Tap heads/install rocker arm stud kit
- Polish crankshaft
- Valve job pair air cooled heads/cut seats/grind valves & lap in
- Rod and main bearings
- Machine flywheel
- Original/unrestored and correct stale air muffler system
- Repair oil leak at reduction box
- Replace axle gaskets
- Rebuild front wheel cylinders
- Rebuild steering box
This Microbus is in excellent condition and the restoration work was quite good. The body gaps are excellent and the panels are very straight. There are no signs of significant body work or prior damage. It appears to have been a very good original example with which to start. The paint looks great. The light color around the windows has some tiny blemishes due to prep that are visible under closer inspection (see pics). The lower turquoise part appears to have fewer of these blemishes and none on the roof. All the glass and rubber are in excellent shape. The wheels have been restored and are wearing new tires and hubcaps. There are some small paint chips where the roof rack attaches to the rain gutter (see pics). All the exterior lights operate properly. The exterior trim, rubber, and brightwork are all new.
The underside is extremely dry and looks to be expertly restored as well. There are no signs of prior corrosion or damage. The exhaust system is correct and original. It has some surface corrosion, but no rot or holes. The engine bay is tidy and original looking with the exception of a voltage regulator and upgraded 12-volt battery.
The interior is equally as nice and also correct color combination for the year. All the seat surfaces look new with no tears or blemishes. The headliner is also new. The sliding canvas top works perfectly and is new. The gauges work properly as well as the ventilation system, safari windows, and both interior lights. The clock does light up when the headlights are on, but does not work. The turn signal cancel even works. The horn works as well. The trunk carpet and rubber mats are all new. The door panels look perfect
This VW drives fantastic. It starts with the first crank of the key and holds an even idle. The gearbox feels tight and it shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping. The power feels strong and it easily moves along for only 40hp. The brakes have a decent initial bite with no fading or pulling. This is a surprisingly easy bus to drive. It’s fun and quite maneuverable. Even on the freeway, it drives nicely and tracks straight. Driving this rare Samba instantly makes you feel like you are on vacation. It’s truly hard not to smile while cruising in it.
This 23-Window comes with extra keys, wooden roof rack, Certificate of Authenticity, original sales brochure, recent engine rebuild receipt, original California yellow correct license plates, key for engine/gas covers, original cargo step, spare wheel with new tire, and jack.
