The key to building a great hot rod 911 is easy; just start with a very good car, and hire the best people in the business.  This example certainly followed those rules.

The previous owner of this backdated recreation started this build in 2010/2011.  It began with his search to find a complete, straight, and dry West Coast pre-1976 911 coupe.  He found this 1975 911S in a barn in Southern California, where it had been sitting since 1989.  It was a solid, dry body and there were no signs of accidents or major repairs.

The build began with stripping the car down to a bare shell.  Everything was rebuilt to new.  Nothing was left undone.  The build was a no-expense-spared example that would cost well over $200,000 to complete today.  A breakdown of the build includes:

Paint and Body:

  • Paint removed to bare metal
  •  Custom ST style flares hand hammered from steel
  • Exclusively factory-early 911 metal panels used
  • No reproduction parts
  • Many parts used for the backdating NOS (new old stock) in Porsche plastic wrapping
  • Doors /front fenders from an early 911 used
  • Carbon fiber hood reinforced with glass for extra strength, custom cut to accommodate an ST style center-fill fuel tank
  • Chrome window trim restored

Engine and Transmission:

Allan Faragallah with Aase Motors completed a full drivetrain build. Allan is well respected for building some of the strongest, fastest, and most reliable air-cooled 911 engines.  Highlights of his work includes:

  • Cross-drilled and balanced 3.2 crank (74.4) knife-edged the counterweights
  • ARP bolts/hardware
  • Twin plug, port, and polish heads (10.3:1 compression)
  • JB twin plug distributor for that correct early RSR-look
  • JE pistons and cylinders (98mm/3.4)
  • Valve job head/surface and bevel
  • Aasco valve springs
  • TRW exhaust valves
  • Rothsport lightweight racing pulley
  • 46mm PMO carbs
  • GE-60 camshafts
  • Aasco RSR style flywheel
  • Aluminum sport clutch kit
  • European headers 1-5/8”
  • Aluminum front cross member
  • Completely rebuilt transmission with upgraded gears and bearings
  • GT limited slip differential
  • Dyno runs resulted at 305hp at crank on engine dyno after build and 272 rwhp
  • Rebuilt 911 SC brake system with new wheel bearings
  • Carrera fender oil cooler with electric fan (controlled by discrete switch on dash)

Suspension Work:

Steve Alarcon with Johnson Alignment did all the suspension work/tuning.  Steve is known for his expertise in setting up Porsches for either track or street.  The goal with this suspension was to create something comfortable for long touring trips and sharp enough for weekend canyon blasts.  His work includes:

  • Terrett RSR suspension kit
  • Front Carrera sway bar (22mm) “through the body”
  • Both sway bars are fully adjustable with drop links
  • 21mm/29mm Sanders hollow torsion bars
  • 930 Turbo tie rod ends
  • New lower ball joints
  • Raised and de-cambered spindles
  • Carrera aluminum trailer arms with uniball joints
  • Wevo rear sway bar consoles
  • Bilstein HD sport shocks/struts
  • Elephant racing spring plates/bushings
  • Corner balanced/aligned
  • Weight including ½ tank gas, spare tire, and tools: 2,188 lbs. (2,094 lbs dry)

Interior and Exterior Details:

TRE Motorsports did most of the final sorting, which included:

  • RS carpet set
  • Momo Prototipo steering wheel with hub extension
  • Euro H4 headlights
  • Factory original horn grills re-chromed
  • VDO gauges by North Hollywood backdated to pre-’73 w/LEDs
  • Early style ST roll bar
  • RSR aluminum throttle pedal
  • Balsa wood 917-style shift knob on Wevo shifter
  • Replaced windshield
  • Special high quality scratch resistant Lexan for all other windows (sides and rear)
  • New NOS dash from Porsche
  • New headliner (by Levon Upholstery)
  • Custom RS-style door panels with deviated stitching
  • Custom cut and chromed door handles for light-weight look
  • Polished factory 15×7 and 15×8 Fuchs

TLG Auto helped with some of the reassembly as well as details in the engine and trunk area.   The late Tony Gerace (founder of TLG) helped the owner with the finishing details as well as final tuning and sorting.

The car was finished in 2013.  The owner added 2,000 miles over the next couple of years.  He participated in some local driving events as well as magazine/calendar photo shoots.  We sold it on March 7th, 2015 with 8,800 miles on the odometer to the current SoCal owners.  For the past 10 years, they’ve added 8k miles.  During their care, they continued servicing the car at Aase Motorsports.  Eventually, they moved to Arizona and are driving the car less.  Besides regular oil services, they did the following:

  • New sun visors and replace speedo sensor (7/19 @ 15,834 miles)
  • Recent services in preparation for sale (10/24 @ 16,941 miles)
  • Oil service (20/50 Penn Oil)
  • Install check valve from Rothsport
  • Replace starter
  • Lower left valve cover gasket
  • Fan belt
  • Brake fluid flush
  • R&R carbs, clean out, change idle jets, gaskets
  • Clean air filters
  • Replace auxiliary oil cooler fan switch (rear wiper switch on dash)

The exterior of this ST build is in great condition and still looks fresh.  The paint and body gaps are very good.  There are minimal signs of use with no significant chips, scratches, or dents.  The windshield has no major chips or cracks.  The Lexan side and rear windows have no major scratches.  The rear window has some light peeling of the Lexan towards the bottom.  The Fuchs wheels have no curb rash and are wearing Toyo R888 tires that are over 10 years old.  Despite having plenty of tread and no signs of age, they should be replaced.  The brakes have about half-life or more remaining.

The interior is equally as nice and also still looks fresh.  The reproduction sport seats show minimal wear with no tears or stains.  The headliner has no stains or sagging issues.  The lightweight carpet has no stains or heavy wear marks.  The door panels still look new.  The dash has no cracks or warping.  All the gauges work.

With over 300 horsepower and just under 2,100 lbs., you can imagine what an experience this 911 is to drive.  The power is smooth and very direct.  It’s got gobs of torque and accelerates hard.  The 915 gearbox shifts smooth with no grinding or sticking and the clutch engages properly.  The shifter has a gate-style feel to it and is very direct.  The brakes have decent bite with some pedal effort.  The steering is responsive and direct.  The car feels like it would stick on aggressive corners, especially with a fresher set of rubber.  This 911 is a raw and distilled experience.  It’s not quiet, but in the best way.

This 911 has been featured in Total 911, Excellence, and Essess (Early 911 S) magazines.  The response from all three was overwhelming.  They each claim that this is one of the best-built early 911 hot rods/sports purpose examples they’ve experienced at that time.

This 911 is currently registered in Arizona, but it was registered for most of its life in California and is smog-exempt.

This 911 comes with 2 keys,  build receipts, copies of the magazine features, calendar feature picture, spare tire, tool roll, and RS lightweight air tank.  The outside grill badges are also included.

**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud.  All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.

Is that the devil whispering in my ear?

I swear I heard, “More throttle, more, more, more…” as I performed my freeway on-ramp Grand Prix test drive.

My inner voices were having a full-blow domestic battle.

I mashed the gas pedal, shifted through the first 4 gears, and flooded my hesitation with pure adrenaline.

The wail from this 300+hp flat six air-cooled engine echoed off the concrete embankment and muzzled the voice of reason in my ears.

I think I reached a state of nirvana.  The pain in my knee was gone, my to-do list evaporated, and I couldn’t think of anything but going faster.

Alas, the euphoria abruptly ended as I caught a glimpse of a CHP entering the freeway ahead of me.

Did he see me?  How could he not see this bright green 911?  My joy was substituted with paranoia.

As my nerve endings continued to spasm, I told myself (and the other voices), it was all worth it.
