Many regard the 911 SC as among the best Porsches ever built. They are simple and pure with a robust aluminum 3.0-liter short-stroke engine as well as a rust-resistant/galvanized chassis. This generation of 911 could easily be used as daily drivers and most were. This, combined with their robust reliability has led to most SCs having hundreds of thousands of miles on them. Porsche produced 2,457 coupes for the U.S. in 1982.
This 911 was built in September of 1981 and sold new by Forest Lane Porsche + Audi of Dallas, Texas on October 24th, 1981. This SC was ordered with the following factory options:
- Platinum Metallic Paint
- Option Group M07
- Forged alloy wheels (16×6 & 16×7)
- Fog lights
- Sport shocks
- Automatic speed control
- Dark brown headliner
- Alarm system
- Digital Radio
- 88 Amp/Hr Battery
- Spoilers, Front & Rear
- Electric Sliding Roof
The final MSRP was $35,455. That would be nearly $122,800 in today’s dollars.
The car was sold new to Ira Zack of Dallas Texas who kept this 911 for 4 years. He sold it to Roswell Motorsports in Georgia on December 29th, 1984, with 12,539 miles. This dealer sold it to Emil Giglio of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky on February 5th, 1985, with 13,232 miles. Emil kept this SC for the next 13 years/50k miles (est.) and sold it on October 23rd, 1997, to James and Amy Heldman of Vienna, West Virginia with around 65k miles. The Heldmans kept this Porsche for the next 12 years and added another 7k miles before selling it to Astorg Motor Co. in Parkersburg, West Virginia on November 9th, 2009, with 73,541 miles. This dealer kept this 911 for less than a year and added less than 1k miles before selling it to Gregory Laurin of Ontario Canada on April 6th, 2010, with around 74k miles. Gregory owned this 911 for the next 6 years and added less than a couple of thousand miles. The owner drove the car down to us from NorCal to have us prepare and help him sell it. Besides our normal vetting process, we had the following done:
- Repair sunroof system with new cables and shade sliders at AAA Sunroof/Convertible
- Full paint correction
- Minor touch-up paint
- Steam clean underside
- Ceramic coat all painted surfaces for extended protection
- Condition leather interior and steam clean carpets
The exterior of this survivor 911 is in excellent shape with minimal signs of use. Some of the paint is still original. There has been touch-up and light paintwork/blending in the past, but it’s difficult to tell as the paint meter reads low as original paint and everything matches nicely. Whatever paintwork might’ve been done was certainly many years and possibly decades earlier. The body panel gaps are excellent with perfect shut lines. Naturally, there are minor nicks and chips from use over the years, but most have been touched up with the proper paint. The glass is in good shape with most of it being original. The windshield has been replaced and there are no significant chips, cracks, or scratches on it. The rest of the glass is in decent shape and original, wearing the proper factory stampings. The Fuchs wheels were recently restored and are in near-perfect shape with no curb rash. They are wearing Continental summer tires that were installed in 2019 and show no signs of age. They have about 7k miles on them with just under half-life remaining. The brakes are all new and have more than 75% life left.
The interior is equally as nice and indicative of a low-mile/well-cared-for survivor. It appears to be mostly original with minimal signs of wear. The leather front seats are original with no tears or other major issues. The driver seat bottom padding was recently replaced for more support, but the original seat cover/skin was reused. The rear seats look unused. The original headliner is in great shape with no tears or stains. The headliner lights work. The carpet is also original with no heavy wear marks or significant stains. The door panels are also original and in excellent condition with just slight warping of the door pockets. The dash is perfect with no cracks or typical warping. All the gauges work properly including the rare and never replaced US DOT 85mph speedometer (Porsche built the US DOT 85 mph speedometers between September 1979 and March of 1982). The clock also works. The power windows, mirrors, and recently rebuilt sunroof all work properly. The original Blaupunkt Bamburg radio with Blaupunkt BEQ-S2 gooseneck EQ power up, however, the speakers are not connected. The electric power antenna does work. The A/C system evaporator has been removed (included with the car) so it doesn’t blow cold, but it does blow air and the A/C lines are all new.
The engine bay is very tidy and looks correct. The original A/C compressor is still in place. The engine sound pad is sagging slightly on the edges. The top of the engine is very dry. The underside is equally as nice with no signs of major corrosion or prior repairs. The bottom of the engine is fairly dry with no major leaks. Lots of new parts are present. The floor, rockers, and jack points are original and dry. There are a few spots on the floor where prior jacking attempts were made in the wrong location, but we had a dent removal service carefully repair the floor back to stock. The trunk area is also clean with no signs of major corrosion or any prior damage. This was a properly driven, maintained, and stored 911.
This 911SC is one of the best and smoothest starting CIS fuel-injected cars I’ve experienced. It starts easily on the first try and holds a steady idle. Once at operating temperature, it pulls strong throughout the rev range with no hesitation or backfiring. The transmission shifts smoothly through the gears with no grinding or slipping. It can be a bit sticky getting into first gear due to the recent transmission rebuild. The brakes have an excellent initial bite with no fading or pulling. The handling is crisp and responsive. The car has been adjusted to European/ROW ride height and not only looks good, but has excellent road manners. It’s a joy to drive and one of the best SCs I’ve driven.
This SC is California registered to March of 2025 and it passes CA’s strict smog/emissions test.
It comes with the original owner’s manual, factory maintenance booklet with stamps, 3 extra keys, space saver spare, jack, factory tool kit, original A/C evaporator with fan/hardware, box of small misc. parts, 2 workshop/repair books, new Porsche outdoor car cover, and 3-ring binder with many receipts as well as ownership history.
**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.
There’s a fine line between a hobby and an obsession.
For the past decade, the owner of this 911 has tinkered with it in his spare time.
What started as a fun project to keep himself busy evolved into something a bit more.
Being quite capable, patient, and skilled, this owner went through every nut and bolt on this SC.
He easily spent 300++ hours in his spare time working on it.
He even decided to tackle the complicated Bosch (CIS) fuel injection. He completely disassembled every part and restored it.
As a result, this is one of the best and smoothest driving SCs I’ve experienced.
I absolutely love seeing one more air-cooled 911 preserved and enjoyed.
