The ’76 912E was an unusual, obscure, and rare footnote in Porsche’s history. A mere 2,099 examples were built as one model year and strictly for the U.S. market. Unfortunately, they quickly disappeared and were forgotten. Many just rusted away and were parted out, while others became donors for racecars or hotrod builds. Of course, the restoration costs are prohibitive so the only way to find a good survivor is typically one that has lived with mostly 1-owner in a dry climate.
This Porsche was built in January of 1976 and we believe sold new by George Follmer Porsche + Audi of Pomona, California. It appears to have been ordered with the following equipment:
- Electric sunroof (1 of only 500 with this option)
- Air-conditioning (possibly dealer installed/removed)
- Fog lights
- 14” light forged alloy wheels (Fuchs)
- Leather wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel
- Blaupunkt tape deck (added later)
- 911 S oil temp/pressure gauge and quartz clock
The first owner kept the car for about 1½ years before trading it back into the Porsche dealer. It was then wholesaled to a local independent dealer. The current owner purchased this 912E on September 30th, 1977 with 47k-miles for $6,000. He financed it through Bank of America (see pic). His good friend’s father owned this local dealership in Southern California and, while driving by one day, he saw this Porsche.
For the past 41-years, he has done a superb job of caring for the car. This car didn’t just sit for decades in the garage without moving. Rather, it was simply used as a daily commuter for decades in SoCal. It was never hot rodded, modified, or raced. The current owner serviced it regularly and was fastidious with his record keeping (see pic of receipts dating back to 1977). In the last 5-years/1k-miles, he started a cosmetic refurbishment of the car, which included a glass-out repaint and light refresh of the interior. The engine was fully rebuilt back in 2003 by Ray Stephens (5k-miles ago). Ray also rebuilt the transmission several years before the engine. This and other highlights of recent and significant service/restoration history include (recent to oldest):
- Reupholster interior using correct OEM pigskin texture vinyl (@118k-miles on 9/18)
- Front seats
- Rear seats
- Carpet (black silver knit)
- Oil service/adjust valves (@ 118k-miles on 4/18)
- Regular oil services, spark plugs and valve adjustments (ever 1k miles or 2-years)
- Service fuel injection/new throttle body/install electronic ignition (9/13)
- Rebuild pedal assembly (9/13)
- Clean brake pistons/front brake pads/flush (9/13)
- Full engine rebuild – top and bottom/pistons and cylinders (2012)
- Removed A/C and installed deck lid mounted oil-cooler
- Full exterior only/glass and trim out repaint (@117k-miles on 10/12)
- Door jambs and interior paint is still original
- Replace sunroof cables, seals, and tracks (11/01)
- Replaced ignition (11/98)
- Factory air-flow meter and cylinder head temp sensor (9/98)

- Synchro sleeve/slider
- Clutch kit

For the last 25+ years, Daniel’s Speed Shop (formerly Ray Stephens Automotive) of Costa Mesa, California did all the service work. Daniel has been a local air cooled mechanic in the area for the past 35+ years and has an excellent reputation among some of the top collectors.
It is clear that this owner was extremely conscientious in his care of this 912. It was serviced regularly regardless of miles and whatever it needed was done. He was also just as meticulous with the appearance as well. The exterior was completely repainted 6-years/2k-miles ago by a top local shop. The paint was looking tired and when the owner was helping load the car on a flatbed to go to the mechanic shop, he accidently ran into the back of the flatbed and caused damage to the front valance, trunk area and fender wells. During the restoration, both front fenders were replaced and the front trunk area/bumper were also repaired. All the glass and trim was removed. It was also repainted the correct shade of factory silver (very light metal flake). We just had our local Porsche specialist inspect the chassis and found that it was in good shape and the prior damage was superficial to the trunk and front fenders. The front pan, suspension, and floor are all unaffected. Also, he performed a compression test and the results were good for a 2.0L type IV U.S./CA smog legal motor (even 110-120).
The exterior looks fantastic with minimal signs of use. The paint has a great shine to it with no significant blemishes. The original 14” Fuchs have been polished and are wearing older Dunlop tires that have no cracks, but will need to be replaced soon. The hand painted crest factory Porsche wheel centercaps have discolored over time. Most of the glass is original and in great shape. The windshield was replaced decades ago with a factory glass that has an integrated antenna for the radio. The front brakes have near full life and the rear pads are just under half-life. All the exterior lights work properly.
The interior is equally as nice. The front and rear seats have recently been recovered with the correct factory material. The headliner is original and in remarkable condition with no tears. The sun visors do have some traditional puffing to them. The electric sunroof and mirrors work as they should. The carpet is new with no wear marks or stains. The door panels are in good shape with some typical light warping of the door pockets. The dash is original and has a couple of cracks (see pics). All the gauges work properly except the clock. The radio and interior lights also work.
Although the 85hp/98lb ft. tq. engine is nothing to brag about, it’s lower weight and better placement towards the bottom middle of the car make it a joy to drive. Plus, it gets fantastic fuel economy and is considerably less money to work on than its 911 counterpart. The car fires up easily with the first twist of the key and it holds a smooth even idle with no excessive smoking. It has nice low end torque and it feels faster around town than you would think. The gearbox shifts smoothly with no slipping or grinding. It easily goes into first gear even while rolling to a stop. The brakes have a nice initial bite and easily slow things down with little effort. The steering and handling are all 911 except it feels nimbler. Turn-in is wonderful and it tracks straight. Some fresh rubber on the wheels would further enhance the driving experience. This example would be ideal for weekend cruising or vintage touring events. It would also be a wonderful candidate to slip in a 911 motor and have a fun hotrod on a great bones/survivor example.
California registration is good through April of 2019 and it passes CA’s strict smog/emissions test.
This Porsche comes with an extra set of keys, original Blaupunkt radio manual, original valet key, original space saver spare, jack, original tool/wheel kit, and most service records from new (see pics). We do not have the original owner’s manual as it was not with the car when this owner purchased it in 1977. However, replacements are easily available.
