For much of the 1970’s and 1980’s, North America’s exposure to Land Rover was their high end luxury Range Rovers. Finally, by the early 90’s, some of their more utility and rugged versions came to our shores in limited quantities known as NAS or North American Specification. Specifically, a total of 5,540 Defender 90’s (D90) over 3-years (1994, 1995, and 1997) were outfitted for our market. Specifically, only 3,039 manuals (1994 and 1995) and 2,501 automatics (1997 only). Unfortunately, these very capable off-roaders typically sustained rough lives and/or neglect over the years. As a result, only handfuls of clean, original, and stock examples have survived. Beluga black was primarily available only in 1995 (there were a few special edition 1994s) making them one of the rarer color options available.
This D90 was built in November of 1994. Standard equipment for these NAS D90s included a cubby box with Clarion AM/FM cassette, 2-drink holders, swing away tire carrier, Bimini top, and rubber floor mats. Furthermore, this example was optioned with air conditioning.
It appears that most of its life it was maintained by a local Land Rover dealership. Besides frequent and routine services, the following items received attention:
- Transmission replaced by Land Rover (@ 53k-miles)
- Major service, spark plugs, fuel pump (@ 53k-miles)
- Electrical system serviced (@54k-miles)
- Starter replaced (@ 54k-miles
- Cooling system serviced/water pump replaced (@54k-miles)
- Transfer case seals replaced (@ 54k-miles
The current Orange County owner purchased this D90 at the end of 2014 with approximately 71k-miles. For the last 4-years/4k-miles, this owner has only used it for light weekend cruising. He has never taken it off road or driven in inclement weather.
Shortly after taking delivery, the current owner took the car to West Coast Rovers to have the do a complete inspection. They recommended a full engine and transmission reseal. This included:
- Cylinder heads cleaned and tested
- Valve reseat
- Main and rod bearings
- Crankshaft seal/head bolts
- Head gaskets, timing cover seal, and timing gear
- Rear main seal and oil pan gasket
- Reseal transfer case (input and output seals)
Furthermore, he performed the following enhancements and services:

- Ball joint sway bar front/rear
- Steering ball joints

In total this owner invested well over $16,000 in the past few years to make this a very well sorted turnkey and great driving example.
It is clear that this D90 was always well cared for and never abused or neglected. The exterior looks fantastic and it wears most of its original paint. The current owner painted the hood and left front fender due to small rock chips and a dent. There is a small paint bubble on the driver door (see pic), which is common. It hasn’t changed in the past 4+ years. The glass is in excellent shape with no cracks or major chips. There are hardly any signs of wear anywhere on the exterior. The original wheels are in good shape with no major rashes and are wearing the correct OEM specification BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires, which have near full tread, but are older. The front brakes have about half life and the rears are just under half remaining.
The interior is equally as nice. The seats have been protected by covers and as a result look fresh with no signs of excessive wear. The door panels and floor are all in very good condition. There is a tear on the plastic surrounding the battery box under the driver seat (see pic). All the gauges work properly including the clock. The A/C system blows cold The interior and exterior lights all work. The stock radio has been upgraded to a Bluetooth Alpine unit that works great. The soft top is in great shape with no tears or signs of wear. The factory tinted plastic windows (3) are also very nice with no major blemishes.
This Land Rover drives fantastic. Having recently experienced a nice NAS 110, this D90 is far more user-friendly for everyday use. It starts easily and has a hidden starting switch for protection. It holds an even idle. The throttle response is instant and pulls nicely through the rev range. Unlike their European counterparts, these NAS D90s were upgraded with 4 piston front disc brakes and 2 piston rear disc brakes. They are a welcome addition as they provide great stopping power with no fade or pulling. Power assisted handling is nice and they are much easier to drive at freeway speeds than you would expect. This is an excellent example that would be a nice addition to any collection or could simply be used daily. And, of course, they are fantastic off road although we doubt this one has seen much dirt in its life.
