When the 1973 ½  911 T was introduced with its all-new Bosch CIS injection system, it was in high demand.  Not only did these ‘73.5 Porsches produce more usable low-end power, but they also proved to be far more reliable and easier to maintain than their carbureted or mechanically injected predecessors.  Furthermore, if you wanted to bump displacement to a 2.7L, these engines had the same thicker case(7R) as the ’73 RS, which allowed for a larger bore.  This unique model was strictly a U.S. model, so only 1,944 CIS coupes were ever built.

This 911 was built in January of 1973 and sold new on March 23rd, 1973 by Stone’s Porsche + Audi of Klamath Falls, Oregon.  It was ordered with the following optional equipment:

  • US Equipment
  • 5-Speed Manual Transmission
  • Recaro Sport Seats (left and right)
  • Appearance Group
    • Velour carpeting
      Aluminum door sills
911S rubber moldings on bumpers and below doors
    • “S Trim”
    • Steel S front lower valance
      911S instruments/gauges
      Rubber bumperettes
      Aluminum rocker panels
  • Forged Alloy Wheels (15×6 Fuchs)
  • Stabilizer Bars Front & Rear
  • Tinted Glass All Around
  • Dunlop Tires
  • Blaupunkt Frankfurt Radio (dealer installed)
  • Through the Grill Fog Lights (dealer/post installed)

The MSRP was $9,260

The first owner was Thomas Klump, a neurosurgeon from Klamath Falls, Oregon.  He kept this 911 for the next 30 years before gifting it to his daughter in 2003.  She kept the car for another 4 years.  This family only added 68k miles to the car over their 34 years of ownership.  He serviced it regularly and mostly at his local Porsche dealer during his care.  By the 1990s, when the Porsche dealer moved, Thomas began using a local Porsche specialist.  Besides routine services, highlights of other repairs include:

By 2008, the Klump family decided it was time to sell their Aubergine 911.  They sold the car to Kevin Watts of Road Scholars (PNW location) who prepared it for the next owner.  Their focus was to perform a light refurbishment while preserving as much originality as possible.  This included:

  • Refinish the factor Recaro sport seats in leather with pepita/houndstooth inserts
  • Replace the original worn headliner with the new black headliner
  • Recover the rear parcel shelf

Lastly, they performed a full vehicle service including:

  • Valve adjustment
  • New clutch
  • New brakes
  • Rebuilt calipers
  • All fluids changed
  • Batteries
  • Michelin tires

After their work, RS sold it to Bob McDowell, a collector from Friday Harbor, Washington on April 16th, 2008 with 68,482 miles.  Bob kept this 911 for the next couple of years and added less than 1k miles.  He entered it in the 2008 Kirkland Concours d’Elegance, in which he placed 2nd.  He began servicing it at Chris’s German Auto Service in Redmond Washington.  Services performed during Bob’s care include:

On August 31st, 2010 with 69,202 miles, Bob sold this 911 to Peter Haynes of Redmond, Washington.  He continued to use Chris’s German Service for repairs for the next few years of ownership.  Highlights include:

  • Rear main seal repair, oil service, fix door locks and hood latch (9/10 @ 69,238 miles)
  • Replace several fuel lines, adjust brake caliper pistons (11/10 @ 69,307 miles)

In October of 2012, Peter sold this 911 to Gary Dixon of Woodinville, Washington with the help of Kevin at Road Scholars.  Gary only kept this 911 for just shy of 2 years and added another 1k miles approximately before he sold it back to Road Scholars on March 25th, 2014 with 71k miles.

Road Scholars sold this 911 to Roger Shapiro of Greenwood Village, Colorado on April 21st, 2014 with 71,103 miles.  He kept this 911 for the next 4 years and added another 2k miles.  During his ownership, he serviced it at his local Porsche dealer, which included:

  • 4 wheel alignment/fix horn (9/14 @ 71,614 miles)
  • New fuel pump, adjust valves, gaskets, transmission mounts (7/16 @ 72,545 miles)

Roger sold this 911 to the current Orange County/SoCal enthusiast on February 16th, 2018 with 73,350 miles.  For the past 6+ years, this owner has added an additional 3,500 miles of light weekend local cruising.  Due to his work schedule, he’s finding less time to enjoy this 911, so he asked us to help find the next caretaker.  During his tenure, he serviced the car at local independent Porsche specialists.  Highlights of work done include:

The exterior of this 911 is in superb survivor condition with lots of originality and a great documented history to support its low miles.  The Aubergine paint job is about 15+ years old and has held up quite well with minimal signs of use.  When Road Scholars purchased the car from the original family the paint was showing age and the front left fender had been replaced decades earlier so they purchased a new factory fender, stripped the car to metal, and properly repainted it.  There are a few minor nicks, chips, and minor flaws that have been touched up over the years.  The trim appears to be original and in good shape.  The glass has no major scratches or chips and the factory stampings are present.  All the exterior lights work.  The factory Fuchs wheels are wearing their original finish and have no significant blemishes with just some light discoloration due to age.  They are wearing older Michelin tires, which are at near full life with no signs of age.  These are a good indication of the miles on the car and the care this car received.  The brakes are at near full-life remaining.

The interior is equally as nice and original.  The factory sport seats have been recovered in leather with pepita wool inserts.  They have no tears or stains.  The rear seats look original and unused.  The headliner and sun visors were replaced over 15 years ago and have no tears, stains, or sagging issues.  The headliner lights both work.  The carpet is original and has no stains or major wear marks.  The original door panels are also in good shape with no warping of the lower pockets.  The dash is original with no cracks or warping and the speaker grill fits nicely.  It’s one of the best original dashes I’ve seen.  All the gauges work, including the original (non-quartz) clock.  The factory Blaupunkt radio works as well and the Hirschman antenna goes up manually without sticking.

The driving experience was one of the best CIS 911 T cars I’ve driven.  Everything felt so tight, fresh, and responsive.  Even cold and not driven for some time, it still started easily within the first try or two.  The hand throttle works and helps maintain even warm-up idle.  Once at operating temperature, the power is very linear and it pulls surprisingly hard throughout the rev range with no popping or stumbling.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding and the clutch engages properly with no slipping.  The brakes have an excellent bite with no fading or pulling and the car tracks straight.  The handling is light with a great steering feel.  It’s compliant and has higher speeds on uneven road surfaces as well as a joy to drive on a twisting back road.

This 911 T has current California registration paid to February of 2025 and it is exempt from California smog.

This 911 comes with 3 keys, original leather key pouch/fob, original owner’s manual with vinyl cover, original maintenance booklet with stamps, original window sticker, original bill of sale, copy of Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, 3-ring binder with service records from new, workshop manual/book, Bosch CIS repair book, custom Cocomats (front), original tool kit, indoor custom car cover, old-school car bra with vinyl carry cases, front license plate bracket, jack, and correct/original full size Fuchs spare wheel with tire.

I can no longer use the Aubergine emoji. 🤷‍♂️

In the early days of texting, I would send a friend a picture of an Aubergine 911 with a heart and an eggplant emoji.

Today, that text would hit a bit differently.

Regardless of how you should or shouldn’t describe this color, it’s befitting this 911’s personality.

It loves to accelerate and is one of the happiest driving ‘73.5 911s I’ve experienced.

And it’s not just me.  I’ve received more smiles and waves while driving it than any other 911.

I think I should order a custom license plate for this Aubergine 911 that captures its happy disposition.

I hope it’s still available.
