The 1985/1986 model year for the 928 is mine and many other 928 enthusiasts’ favorite.  It combines some of the best of the later S4 mechanical developments with the lighter and more elegant/simpler design of the first generation.  These cars received the 5.0L/32 valve motor as did the later S4s including ABS, S4 updated suspension package, and similarly improved flow exhaust system.  Basically, most of the mechanicals of the S4 are in a 200lb lighter body.  Only a handful of these unique models were delivered to North America and even fewer were fitted with manual transmissions.

This Porsche was built on July 24th, 1985, and delivered new on January 31st, 1986 by Fred Lavery Company, the Porsche dealer in Birmingham, Michigan.  Although these flagship cars were well equipped with many standard features, this example was ordered with the following additional options:

  • US Standard Emissions
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Blaupunkt radio Monterey
  • Hi-Fi sound package with speakers
  • Amplifier system
  • Alarm system
  • Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
  • Electric sliding sunroof
  • Goodyear tires

It appears that this 928 spent the majority of its life in Ohio.  The owner who kept it the longest lived in Medina, Ohio.  This owner purchased it in 1999 with 39k miles and kept it for 16 years before selling it in the summer of 2015 with 60k miles to Regalado Capili of Morgan Hills, California.  Shortly after Regalado purchased this 928, the timing belt/water pump service was performed (8/15 @ 60,200 miles).  Regalado kept this 928 for a couple of years and added another 2,500 miles before selling it to the current Orange County, California owner on August 3rd, 2017 with 62,746 miles. It appears sometime recently, new Bilstein shocks/struts were also installed.

The current owner is a long-time Porsche 928 enthusiast with a very large collection.  He has a full-time onsite mechanic who tends to his collection.  This mechanic is a 928 expert and used to work at Precision Engineering in Orange, CA before opening his own shop.  He even did the top-end engine rebuild on my personal 928.  He’s highly respected in the local 928 community.  Despite only adding fewer than 1,000 miles over the past 5+ years, the car was driven regularly to keep fluids moving.  Highlights of services performed during this owner’s care include:

  • Restore correct factory wheels in the proper anodized finish by Al Reed
  • Refurbish A/C system including new expansion valve and relay fan
  • Refurbish climate controller box/sliders
  • Make sure all exterior and interior lights work
  • Temperature sensor for the fuel injection
  • Axle boots
  • Air flow sensor
  • H4 headlights
  • Install period correct Alpine cassette tape deck/head unit

We just had our 928 specialist go through the car and perform the following services:

  • Oil service
  • Brake fluid flush
  • Clutch fluid flush
  • Coolant service
  • Inspected timing belt and water pump
  • Check spark plugs – look fresh
  • Replaced upper and lower boots on front ball joints
  • Replaced clutch arm bushing – clutch engages better now
  • Install new front brake pad sensors
  • Repair heater valve for a/c mixture
  • Repaired oil weeping from plug on rear of engine

The exterior of this 928S is exceptional.  It’s clear that it’s not only a low-mile survivor example, but was well cared-for, garaged, and not driven in harsh weather.  The paint has a deep shine and is mostly original as verified with a paint meter.  Based on the paint meter readings, the hood and the right front fender were repainted with blending into the passenger door.  There are no signs of any damage and the paint match is excellent.  It was done many years if not decades ago.  There is some very light checking on the top of the right front fender.  All the exterior lights work and the lenses are in good shape.  The glass appears to be all original, including the windshield.  The proper factory stamps are visible.  The wheels look fresh with no significant blemishes or curb rash.  They are wearing Bridgestone Potenza tires that were installed in 2015.  Despite having more than half tread left, they have aged out and need to be replaced.  The rear brakes have just under half-life remaining and the front brakes are at 75% life.

The interior is equally as nice, original, and indicative of the low miles.  The front seats are in great shape with no tears or rips and very light signs of use.  The rear seats look new.  The headliner has no sagging or other issues.  The door panels look fresh with no warping of the pockets or excess wear marks.  The carpet is also very nice with no major signs of wear or stains.  The driver-side floor mat is showing some wear.  The dash is near perfect with no major cracks or warping.  The vents are also in good shape with just a few pieces missing on the passenger door.  The power mirrors, windows, sunroof, and trunk release all work.  The radio also works and the A/C blows cold.  The heating system works as do all the interior lights.

We just took this 928 on a 200 mile test loop including open freeway cruising at 80mph+, twisting mountain roads with elevation gain to 7,000 feet, and downtown LA bumper to bumper traffic.  This 928S operated fantastic.  It is surprisingly quick and balanced on the mountain roads while being quite comfortable on the freeway.  After our test drive, we made a small list of minor things, which the owner’s 928 mechanic just took care of.

It starts easily (when cold, it needs a few seconds of throttle help) and holds an even idle.  Once at operating temperature, it is surprisingly quick and accelerates throughout the rev without any hesitation.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding.  The clutch feels strong with no slipping.  The brakes have great initial bite with no fading.  The handling is predictable and very capable making it better on twisting roads than one would imagine.

This 928 just passed the strict California emissions test.

This 928 comes with the original owner’s manual with vinyl cover, original stamped maintenance booklet, two keys, tool kit, space saver spare, lug nut wrench, jack, original floor mats (both fronts and one rear), and cargo cover with storage boxes.

Don’t be a Porsche lemming!

Everything you’ve read about the last generation of 928s being the best isn’t necessarily true.

The 1985/1986 Porsche 928 is actually the one to own.

Now, hold on. Give me a minute to put on my blast suit and crawl into my bomb shelter before you 928 forum zealots come after me.

As the top authority of my own 928 opinion, the ‘85/‘86 model years are not only still true to the original Wolfgang Möbius design, but they are 150 to 250 pounds lighter than the following generations. Also, they’re the only years of the lighter body to get the higher-power 4-valve engine of the later models.

Unfortunately, only handful of these were imported to North America and of those, less than 20% were ordered with the 5-speed dogleg Getrag manual gearbox.

Furthermore, the selection pool dwindles when you eliminate all the black ones, the countless destroyed due to neglect, or those ordered with the nasty full-body rub strips.

Does anyone want to buy my black 1984 928 automatic so I can just keep this one?
