The 3.2L Carreras are the workhorses of the 911 run.  I have countless clients who have gone 200k, 300k, even 400k miles on the original motor.  They are built like tanks.  Of all these cars, the ones referred to as the “G50”’s have become the most desirable.  From 1987 to mid-1989, Porsche stopped making their transmissions and outsourced the job.  The result was one of the most durable transmissions ever installed in a Porsche (and one that was much easier to operate).  Some of the 1987 models were known for valve issues, but by 1988 and 1989, these cars were wholly sorted out.  Halfway through their 1989 production year, Porsche ended the Carrera model and began production on the 964 C4.  The result is that there are very few of these Carrera models available.  Specifically, Porsche only built 1,156 coupes for our market.  They built nearly 3 times as many open-roof cars during that period!

This Porsche was built in September of 1988 and sold new on May 16th, 1989, by Zipper Porsche of Beverly Hills, California.  It was ordered from the factory with the following options:

  • California Emissions
  • Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio
  • Full Power Left Seat
  • Sound Package with Amplifier
  • Additional Amplifier for HiFi
  • Cruise Control
  • Electric Sunroof

The MSRP was $52,255, equivalent to $140,944 in today’s money.

The first owner was Richard Kale of Santa Monica, California.  He kept this Carrera for over 20 years and added 58k miles.  During his ownership, he serviced the car regularly at either the selling Porsche dealer or Red Line in Santa Monica.  Besides regularly scheduled services, the only other significant repairs were:

  • Replace A/C compressor shaft
  • New alternator
  • Distributor

He sold this Carrera on August 31st, 2009, with 58,456 miles to Jeffrey McGillicuddy, a physician in Auburn, California.  This owner kept the car for only 20 months and added 1,400 miles.  He did a major service just before selling it to the current owner on October 19th, 2011, at 59,852 miles.  Prior to purchasing the car, the current owner had an inspection done, including compression and leakdown tests.  The results were very good, so he purchased the car.

This current owner is a fellow enthusiast and rally friend of ours.  We’ve done several driving tours together, going back to 2017.  This included a trip to Oregon for the Emory Campout as well as driving out to Texas for the Hill Country Rallye.  For the past 13+ years of his ownership, he’s added another 40k miles of fun weekend driving.  He’s also moved to various locations for work or family, and the car was shipped out for each move.  During his care, he and the car lived in Washington (1 year), Illinois (2 years), Northern California (6 years), and Florida (the past 4 years).  He’s been fastidious with his service and either used a local Porsche dealer or a highly recommended independent specialist.  Highlights of services during his care included:

  • Regular annual oil services
  • Replaced clutch kit and brake fluid flush (3/12 @ 62,453 miles)
  • Shifter slide bushing and oil service (3/15 @ 70,622 miles)

This owner realized that he’s just not driving the car as much now in Florida, and shipped the car to us to find the next owner.  Upon receiving the car, we performed the following services:

  • Repaired large chips in windshield
  • Full paint correction and detail
  • Polish paint
  • Touch up paint wherever needed
  • Ceramic coating
  • Steam clean engine, wheel wells, and underside
  • Condition/treat leather seats
  • New hood shocks
  • Oil service (will be completed before delivery to new owner)
  • New trunk carpet (on order)*

The exterior of this G50 Carrera is in excellent original/preservation condition.  The paint appears to be original, as verified by paint meter readings.  There are no signs of any prior work or repairs.  The proper VIN decals are present on the doors, hood, and deck lid.  There are minor chips and nicks from years of use, which have been professionally touched up.  There are spots on the right rear fender where, years ago, something splattered on the paint and etched it.  We’ve done paint correction on that panel to make it look as good as possible without harming the original paint further.  All the exterior trim and lights also appear to be original.  There is a chip on the passenger side headlight lens, however, all the exterior lights work properly.  The factory Fuchs wheels (16×6 & 16×8) are wearing their original anodized lip and satin painted centers.  There are no major curb rash, and some fading of the black paint.  The wheel lock lugs are in place, but no locks.  They are wearing Michelin Pilot Sport tires dated end of 2017/installed in 2018 with 1/3 to 1/2 life remaining.  The brake pads are at 1/3 to 1/2 life as well.

The interior is just as nice, if not cleaner, than the outside.  The leather seats have no tears or rips and just typical light exit bolster wear.  The up/down power functions of the seats work.  The rear seats look unused.  The headliner has no tears, rips, stains, or sagging issues.  Both sun visors are in good shape.  The door panels show minimal pocket warping, and the door stays appear to be in good shape.  The carpet has no significant stains or heavy wear marks and has floor mats in good shape.  The carpet under the floor mats was missing and had been before this owner’s purchase.  However, 4 new factory floor mats are in place.  The dash has no cracks or warping, and all the gauges work, including the clock.  The radio powers on, but it needs a code, which is unavailable.  The radio is a Blaupunkt Porsche radio from a later car.  The A/C system blows air, but is not charged.  The power door locks, windows, cruise control, and sunroof all work properly.

This Carrera starts on the first try.  The RPMs will surge a few hundred for the first 20 seconds or so as the car warms up, and then the engine holds an even idle.  The power response is strong throughout the rev range with no hesitation.  The brakes have a good initial bite with no fading or pulling.  The car tracks straight and the suspension is compliant on uneven road surfaces while being very flat on twisting roads.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding, and the clutch engages properly.

This Carrera has been smog checked in California for most of its life and will pass CA’s strict smog requirements.

This Porsche comes with 2 main keys, 1 valet key, 2 wheel lock keys, Porsche leather key fob, Porsche pouch key fob, original wheel locks, extra bulbs, extra DME relays, original CA plates when car was delivered new, original owner’s manuals in vinyl cover, original maintenance booklet with dealer stamps, most service records from new, original window sticker (laminated), space saver spare, jack, tool kit, and air compressor.

*New trunk carpet on order and will be delivered to the next owner.

**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud.  All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.

Come rally with us!

There’s more to life than driving your vintage Porsche to Cars & Coffee.

Go for a drive…a very long one with like-minded enthusiasts.

This ‘89 Carrera is perfect for that.  In fact, I met the owner of this last year impact-era 911 when he and his wife joined my wife and me on our pilgrimage to the Emory Porsche Campout in 2017.

A year later, he followed us out to the Texas Hill Country Rallye.

The Targa California is right around the corner and this G50 Carrera would be perfect for that event.

Get out and drive.  It’s good for your soul.
