Automotive journalists have touted the Porsche 996 Turbo as one of the most drivable super cars on the road. Their performance numbers were incredible. Yet, their ease of use made them a great daily driver option. Talking with countless Porsche mechanics, they all agree that these Turbos are among the most reliable motors (the famous Mezger engine) that Porsche has ever built. The Turbo S cars were truly something special. Only a limited number was produced for the last year of the 996 production run in 2005. These cars came standard with the X50 package, which produces 444hp/457lb ft. torque. 0-62mph time was 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 193mph! To stop these cars all Turbo S cars came standard with the PCCB ceramic brakes. Finally, more standard equipment which included the Bose digital audio system, Litronic headlights, heated seats, and the Porsche Communication Management system with navigation.
This Porsche was built on June 10th, 2005, and sold new on July 20th, 2005 by Pioneer Porsche of San Diego, California. Although the Turbo S models come very well equipped with many standard items that are usually options, this particular example was further customized with the following factory exclusive options:
- Dark Wood Package – Small
- Porsche Crest in Headrest
- Lumbar Support – Left Seat
- US Standard Emissions
- Metropol Blue Floor Mat
- Delete Cabriolet Hardtop
- 3-Spoke Steering Wheel in Dark Wood with Leather
- Stainless Steel Exhaust Pipes
- Supple Leather Front and Rear
- Heated Front Seats
- Tiptronic S
- Rear Center Console Painted Exterior Color
- Dark Wood Aluminum Tip Knob/Brake
The MSRP was $152,800.
The first owner was a local SoCal resident who kept the car for a decade before selling it to the next local Orange County owner in May of 2015 with 56k-miles. All of the services were performed at the local Porsche dealer, which included:
- Regular oil services and brake flushes
- Coolant intake pipes replaced (@57k-miles)
- Replace intake monitor sensor
- Water pump replaced/coolant flush (@54k-miles)
- 60k Major service including spark plugs
- Roll bar system and air bag services performed every 3-years
- Alignment (@50k-miles)
- All 6 coils replaced (@50k-miles)
- 45k Minor service performed (@43k-miles)

This OC owner kept the car for about 18 months and used it as her daily driver. Although she loved the car, she has the opportunity to purchase some property and we helped her sell it nearly 4-years ago. During her 12k miles of ownership, she serviced it regularly, which included:
- Oil services every 3k-miles
- Battery replaced
- Major service at Porsche dealer (@65k-miles)
- General inspection of vehicle
- Oil service
- Replace cabin and air filters
- Replace spark plugs
- Clean out radiator vents and drains
We sold this Turbo S for the previous owner in January of 2018. When we got the car then, we took it to our local mechanic and had a new front spoiler lip installed and new wheel center caps. Finally, we had our mechanic put the car on the lift and go through it to see if there were any signs of abuse or other issues. He found the car to be in clean shape with no leaks or damage.
We then sold it to the current Reno, Nevada enthusiast on January 24th, 2018 with 67,500 miles. The current owner recently retired and is planning on moving to Florida. He needs to thin out his collection a bit. For the past 4-years/1,500 miles, he has used it likely for weekend cruising and never drove it in the winters or poor weather. During his care, he performed the following services:
- New battery (09/18)
- Replaced LR tire due to nail
- Rennkit rear spoiler electric conversion with extended 4.75” lift
- Replace temp display pixels
- Restore wood on steering wheel and center console
- Last oil service 18-months ago
The exterior of this Turbo S looks extremely nice and clearly not abused. The paint appears to be all original and verified with a paint meter. There are minimal signs of use with just some very light nicks on the front nose from use. The glass is all original including the windshield and wearing the proper factory stampings. There is some light rash and a few minor scratches from use but no significant chips or cracks. All the lights work properly as does the rebuilt electric rear wing. The wheels are in very good condition with just a few light spots of rash. They are wrapped in Bridgestone tires with just under half-life remaining. The left rear was replaced a few years ago, so it’s near full tread. The other three are dated 2014 but show no signs of age. The ceramic brakes look brand new with no cracking and near full pad life. The soft top is in great shape with no tears and just some light wrinkling. The rear glass is perfect.
The interior is very nice. The supple leather seats show minimal signs of use with no tears or rips. The door panels have no warping and look fresh. The carpet has no stains and shows hardly any signs of use. The dash has no cracks. The soft top headliner is in great condition and the full power top works flawlessly and seals tightly. In fact, it makes no wind noise and you can’t tell the difference between this and a coupe. All the gauges, lights, radio, a/c, heated seats, and other controls operate properly. The wood on the top part of the steering looks perfect as it was just restored. The rest of the interior wood trim was restored as well and looks new. The interior smells fresh and there are no unusual odors.
What’s remarkable about this Turbo S is that even though it is over a decade old, it still drives like new. This Turbo feels incredibly tight with no rattles or other strange sounds. It starts easily and the throttle response is incredible. The power pulls strong through all the gears. The shifting is surprisingly quick…much quicker than most with a manual. There is no slipping or hesitation…just fast changes and immediate power. These are much easier and faster to accelerate from a dead stop than the manual versions. The brakes are truly incredible. They inspire confidence in all conditions. The handling is precise in both dry and wet weather. The AWD system is fantastic as it can pull you out of corners with ease. The car tracks straight with no pulling.
This Turbo will pass California smog as it used to be registered here and the exhaust is original.
This turbo includes two main keys, owner’s manuals, Porsche COA, original window sticker, collapsible space saver spare, tools, air compressor, jack, wind deflector with storage case for trunk, sun shade for windshield, three-ring binder with some receipts, and new car cover.

The badge “Turbo S” used to be special.
The letter “S” was first used by Porsche on their 356 model. It stood for “Super.” It resurfaced in 1967 on the first 911. Now, it stood for “Sport.”
For the next couple of decades, “S” was slapped on the rear of many Porsches that really didn’t deserve it.
Although Porsche’s Turbo model had been out for over 15 years, “S” was finally assigned to a Turbo for the first time in the 1990s with the 964 and 993 models. These were very limited and special cars. (The U.S. only 930S, which stood for “Slantnose,” doesn’t count).
Alas, the 996 Turbo finally received the “S” badge in the last year of production. Only a handful were built, and it was the first time it was used on a Turbo Cabriolet.
This was the last time “S” was used sparingly. When people ask me what it stands for on this Turbo, I usually say, “Special.” When they respond with, “What about the Taycan Turbo S?” I reply, “Stupid.”
