The 997 Porsche models of the 911 are quickly becoming fan favorites.  They are considered the final iteration of the “analog” 911.  The new 3.8L flat-six engine produced 355 hp and 295 lb ft tq.  This was the first year the Targa was offered in an AWD platform and the last generation of the sliding glass roof that provided easy rear seat loading with the deployable rear glass hatch.  Production numbers were around 3,500 units worldwide and even fewer manual transmission 4S Targas delivered to North America.  This generation Targa lowered the weight of the roof with lighter glass and updated the operating system for improved reliability.

This C4S was built in August of 2006 and sold new on February 12th, 2007 by Higginbotham Automobiles, the Porsche dealer in Jackson, Mississippi.  Although well-equipped as standard, it was tastefully appointed with the following factory options:

  • Self-Dimming Mirrors
  • Heated Seats
  • 19” Turbo Wheels
  • Manual Transmission
  • Sport Chrono Package Plus
  • Navigation for PCM
  • Bose High End Sound Package
  • PAG Launch Code
  • Guards Red
  • Black Floor Mats with Porsche Lettering
  • Power Seat Package
  • Porsche Crest in Headrests

The MSRP was $108,195, which is approximately $162,980 today.

The first owner was from Flora, Mississippi.  That owner only kept the car for about 18 months/3,600 miles before it was sold in November of 2008 to the next owner from Corona del Mar, California.  This owner only kept this C4S for 18 months as well and serviced it at Newport Beach Porsche.  It was then sold on February 12th, 2010 with 10,768 miles to the next caretaker from Coto de Caza, Orange County who only kept the car for less than a year and added 6k miles before selling it to an enthusiast from Irvine, California in November 2010 with 16,416 miles.  This owner continued to service it at Newport Beach Porsche.  This owner kept the car for 9 years and added 23k miles before trading it into Porsche of Irvine.  It then went through Porsche’s CPO (certified pre-owned) process, bringing all of its services up to date and a 100-point inspection.  It was sold as a CPO-certified Porsche to the current owner on September 2nd, 2019 with 40,804 miles.

The current owner is an enthusiast who is also fanatical about taking care of his special cars.  For the past 5 years, he’s added 15k miles of fun weekend driving and touring.  The car was never tracked, always garaged, and frequently serviced.  The majority of the services were performed at Newport Beach Porsche, especially while under warranty.  Recently, services have been at a top local independent Porsche specialist.  Highlights of services and maintenance under his care include:

We just performed an over-rev diagnostic report run and the results were excellent.  Level 1 (at redline) was 4.3 seconds over the total life of this 911.  Level 2 (7,400 rpm) was just 0.7 seconds.  Level 3 (7,600 rpm) was only 0.06 seconds.  Levels 4 through 6 show 0.  The last time at redline was over 50 hours/1,623 miles ago.  The average speed this 911 has been driven over the last 17 years is only 32 mph.  Furthermore, the current owner recently had an oil analysis performed by Blackstone Labs, which further verified that the engine condition was in good health with no concerning levels of metal in the engine.

The exterior of this C4S Targa is exceptional and a clear indication of the care this Porsche has received.  The paint is in great shape with no significant flaws.  There are a few minor scratches that have been professionally touched up.  Based on paint meter readings, there was some light paintwork on the hood with blending into the right front fender.  Visually, there is no perceivable difference, and was mostly likely due to rock chips.  The rest of the car is wearing its original paint.  The glass is in great shape with no major chips or scratches and all the proper factory stampings are visible.  The Targa top glass also looks good with no major flaws.  The factory 19” wheels have no major curb rash and are wearing 2-year-old Michelin PS4S tires with under 5k miles on them and between 50%-75% life remaining.  The brake pads have approximately half-life remaining.

The factory full leather interior is equally as nice and showcases the care this 911 received over the past 17 years.  The front seats show minimal signs of wear with no tears or heavy wear marks.  The rear seats look unused.  The Targa top sunshade has no tears and works properly.  The carpet and door panels look fresh.  The dash has no issues and all the gauges work along with all the other electric functions including the windows, mirrors, seats, interior lights, Sport Chrono dash timer, and sliding glass top.  The upgraded factory Bluetooth/Apple CarPlay PCM stereo is a welcome upgrade and looks stock.  The A/C system also blows cold.

This 997 C4S drives fantastically and feels no different when I drove a similar new one.  Everything feels tight and responsive.  It starts easily and has an excellent throttle response.  The Fister modified exhaust has a nice throaty sport-purpose sound without droning or being too loud.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding or any clutch issues.  The brakes have an excellent bite with no fading or pulling.  The car tracks straight and the handling feels crisp and responsive.

California registration is paid to November of 2024 and it passes California’s strict emissions/smog test.

This 997 comes with 3 keys, selling dealer key fob, original owner’s manuals with vinyl case, original radio/PCM unit, software tune kit (stock tune installed), front license plate tow hook mount, air compressor, tool kit, tow hook, German flat repair kit, recent service receipts, CocoMat floor mats (fronts), stock shifter assembly, battery charger, stock wheel lug nuts for running no spacers, CPO promotional package (book/carbon fiber pen), indoor satin-style car cover, and windshield sunshade from Porsche.

Why doesn’t the rear glass open on all 911s?

It seems so simple and other car manufacturers have been doing it for years.

Even Porsche does it with their 924, 928, 944, & 968 cars, but why didn’t they make the 911 rear glass open as a hatch?

Anyone who has ever taken a road trip in a 911 will understand.

Reverse-birthing luggage into the backseat area of a 911 by pushing it between the front seat tilted forward and the B-pillar will cause crippling back pain. As cool as this elegant solution is, it’s not the only reason I adore this last-generation sliding-glass Targa. I feel like the Pope driving in a bubble.

Coincidentally, 15 years ago, I had a religious moment while driving a sliding-glass Targa.

I was in the canyons when it started to rain.  As the exhaust music harmonized with the raindrops bouncing off the glass, the distant sun refracted off the water and through the glass roof like a prism. I was literally bathed in a rainbow-filled full leather cabin.

This generation Targa will always own a corner of my heart.
