Are the 981 Caymans the “last” of a breed?  This question has been asked by Porsche enthusiasts frequently over recent years.  With turbocharging being incorporated throughout Porsche’s engine offerings as well as losing two cylinders and PDK becoming almost standard, these Caymans could be the last of a proper 6-speed manual normally aspirated flat 6 driving experience without having to buy a GT4.  Plus, with the next generation being hybrid and electric, we’re getting further away from a pure Porsche sports car.  Journalists have praised the virtues of this third generation and have even called it “compellingly close to perfection.”

This Cayman S was built in May of 2014 and sold new on August 2nd, 2014 by Porsche of San Diego, California.  The 981 Caymans came fairly well equipped as standard, however, this example was further factory ordered with the following options:

  • Agate Grey Metallic
  • Leather Interior
  • Manual Transmission
  • 20” SportTechno Wheels
  • Infotainment Package
  • Bose Surround System
  • Smoking package (extra power outlet)
  • Wheel Center Caps w/Colored Porsche Crest
  • SiriusXM® Satellite Radio Receiver

The total MSRP was $72,410.

The first owner lived in San Diego and only kept the car for 9 months/4,533 miles.  He then traded it back in.  The Porsche dealer in Livermore, California sold it as a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) Porsche on July 23rd, 2015 with 4,646 miles to Mr. Robert Milner of Manteca, California.  Mr. Milner was the ideal conscientious Porsche owner.  Not only did he service the car regularly, but he also kept a log book recording all services as well as every tank of gas and price per gallon.  We have copies of the log book that are included with the vehicle.  Mr. Milner kept this Cayman S for 4 years and added 22k miles.  Highlights of services performed at the Porsche dealership under his care include:

  • Electrical system checked, general inspection, program 2nd key (9/2/15 @ 5,286 miles)
  • Full front clear bra/PPF installed at Porsche dealer (9/2/15)
  • Oil service, brake fluid flush, air filter, and cabin filter (8/11/16 @ 12,950 miles)
  • Oil service and inspection (8/4/17 @ 18,214 miles)
  • Oil service and brake fluid flush (8/9/18 @ 24,155 miles)
  • Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires (8/30/18 @ 24,489 miles)

Milner sold this Cayman S on May 12th, 2019 with 27,083 miles to a local Los Angeles area mature enthusiast who is a good client of ours.  Although this owner has had some superb vintage Porsches over the years, he decided he wanted something more modern to drive to his Palm Springs area home.  As an extra car he only drove it a thousand miles over his 19-months of ownership.  He serviced it at his local Porsche dealers, which included:

  • Oil service and inspection (1/24/20 @ 27,465 miles)
  • Replace tank leakage diagnostic module campaign and inspection  (11/23/20 @ 27,934 miles)

We helped him sell this Cayman S to another one of our clients on December 17th, 2020 with 28,300 miles.  For the next 2 years, this owner only added another 1,200 miles.  He used it for light weekend driving in the area.  Originally, he thought he would use it for longer weekend trips to visit his daughter and family up north.  However, that really never happened.  During his care, he replaced the battery and also added new factory black floor mats.  Due to health reasons, we helped this owner by selling this 981 to another local Orange County enthusiast/collector on January 11th, 2023 with 29,549 miles. This current local owner only added a thousand miles over the past 20 months.  He too used it for some local trips to San Diego and Palm Springs.  During his care, he took it to Porsche of Newport Beach on 2/23 at 29,564 miles for an oil service and inspection.  This owner just purchased a 992 Carrera T manual and doesn’t need the Cayman S any longer.  Since we’ve sold it twice in the past, he asked us to help find the next caretaker.

This 981 Cayman S is immaculate and looks like new.  The exterior is near perfect with hardly any signs of use.  The paint is original and verified with a paint meter.  The entire front of the car (fenders, bumper, hood, headlights, and side mirrors) is protected with clear bra.  The underside of the front left corner of the bumper has some scuffs from a parking curb, but not noticeable unless you’re underneath the car.  The glass is all original including the windshield with no major chips or cracks and wearing the proper factory stampings.  The wheels have no curb rash and are wearing Michelin tires, installed by the Porsche dealer, and have less than half-life left.  They are 8 years old and have 6k miles on them.  The front brakes have just over a third of life remaining while the rears are at about half-life.

The interior is equally immaculate.  There are minimal signs of wear.  The seats look great.  The carpet, door panels, and dash are like new.  Recently, the headliner started to sag, which is common with Caymans. We just had our local upholstery specialist replace the whole headliner and it no longer sags and matches nicely.  All the gauges, buttons, controls, etc. all work properly as do the interior lights.  The A/C system blows cold.

This Cayman S drives great with no perceivable issues.  There are countless automotive reviews online that tout the virtues of these cars and they are all right.  Everything on this example feels brand new, crisp, tight, and fresh.  Whether you are looking for something to use daily, spirited weekend jaunts, or longer road trips, this Cayman S is easily suited for all of those activities.

California registration is current and possibly paid to August of 2025.  It passes California’s strict emissions test.  This vehicle has zero modifications from factory.

This 981 comes with an extra master key (2 total), original owner’s manuals, tool kit, original MSRP window sticker, most service receipts, copies of fuel log, original factory floor mats, new black floor mats, tire inflator, and factory tire repair kit.

“It’s the last of…” or “The end of an era.”

I see these taglines all the time when reading car listings.

It’s almost as bad as “1 of 1.” 🤮

However, these Porsche 981s (Boxsters and Caymans from 2012 through 2016), are the end of something special: a normally aspirated flat 6 mid-engine sports car from Porsche.

Manufacturers struggle with CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards, which have forced Porsche to experiment with 4-cylinder versions and twin turbo options.

The next model year of Boxsters and Caymans will be ALL ELECTRIC…what a tragedy.

Which also means NO MORE MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.

I’m not sure how collectible these will be in the future, but I do know they will always be a fan favorite among enthusiasts.
