Although on paper it sounds like the GT4 is a bit of a parts bin car with the 3.8L engine from the Carrera S and the suspension from the 991 GT3, it was a considerable engineering feat for Porsche’s skunkworks/GT division, headed by Andreas Preuninger.  His brilliant engineers once again created a home run with the first Cayman to wear a GT badge.  Its cult-like followers clamored to their local dealers and the 2,000+ units allocated for the U.S. were quickly spoken for who wouldn’t want a 3,000 lb/385 hp back road street weapon that was a blast on track, but still easy enough to drive daily.

This GT4 was built on May 12th, 2015, and delivered new on July 30th, 2015 to the owner of Porsche of Norwell, Massachusetts.  It was tastefully ordered with the following factory options:

  • Extended range fuel tank (16.91 gallons)
  • Porsche ceramic composite brakes (PCCB) – not installed, but included.
  • Passenger footwell storage net
  • Center console power port (aka “smoking package”)
  • Radio delete
  • Sport chrono package
  • Porsche track precision App & preparation for lap trigger
  • Black leather interior with stitching in Platinum Grey
  • Wing supports in Black
  • Sapphire Blue Metallic
  • Full (carbon) bucket seats
  • Anodized black brushed aluminum interior package
  • Storage compartment lid in Alcantara with Porsche logo
  • Seat belts in silver grey
  • Door-sill guards in stainless steel, illuminated

The total MSRP was $103,260, equivalent to $136,860 in today’s money.

The first owner was the principal of the selling Porsche dealership.  It was custom ordered by an enthusiast as it came with all the performance options and minimal “fluff” bits.  It stayed with the dealership for the first couple of years and 11k miles before being sold to the first (on paper) owner from Hollywood, Florida.  This owner only kept the GT4 for a year/4k miles before trading it into his local dealer.

The next owner was a Southern California enthusiast who purchased this GT4 in September of 2018 with 15k miles.  He kept this GT4 for the next couple of years and added 6k miles.  During his care, he performed the following services/upgrades:

  • Replaced dash at Porsche under warranty due to leather lifting (5/19 @ 18,160 miles)
  • PPF (Paint Protection Film) by Protective Film Solutions
    • Paint correction
    • Touch up paint on chips
    • Xpel brand PPF used
    • PPF on full nose (hood, fenders, bumper)
    • PPF on headlights, extended rockers, side scoops, and door cups
    • Ceramic coating
  • Safety/protective equipment
    • Bolt in rear roll/harness bar
    • Schroth 6-point cam-lock belts (currently removed, but included)
    • Track Nanny module (reduces exhaust sound for tracks with db limits)
    • Carbon seat leather exit bolster protectors (both left and right seats)
    • Longer wheel studs
    • Tinted windows to preserve interior
    • Steel brake rotor and pad upgrade to preserve original ceramic rotors and pads
    • (Original ceramic rotors and pads are included with the purchase)
    • Upgraded front springs

This owner sold this GT4 to his good friends/current owners in June of 2020 with 21,202 miles.  The current owners are long-time Porsche enthusiasts and active PCA members who own full race cars with which they participate in Porsche club racing.  They purchased this GT4 to have something fun for the street that they could also enjoy on the occasional track day and to help with driving instruction.  As a result, they were fastidious with their service and general vehicle care.  The car was never abused and still wears its original paint.  Most of the services were performed at GMG in Santa Ana, California.  Highlights of services over the past 4 years/7k miles include:

  • First services at GMG after purchasing GT4 (6/20 @ 22,434 miles)
    • GMG seat angle adjusters (both seats)
    • Clean air filters
    • Replace oil cooler
    • Transmission service
    • Oil service
    • Inspection
  • Tank leakage diagnostic module, air filter, multi-point inspection (12/20 @ 23,965 miles)
  • repairs at GMG (5/21 @ 24,581 miles)
    • Tank vent valve
    • Adjust ride height, corner balance, 4 wheel alignment
    • New front windshield
    • Install stock factory headers (performance headers available*)
    • GMG adjustable billet thrust arm bushings
    • Replace right rear brake ventilation duct
  • Oil service, transmission service, cabin filter, inspection (7/21 @ 24,830 miles)
  • New A/C compressor, receiver drier, dye test, R134 refrigerant (3/22 @ 25,551 miles)
  • Oil service, top off fluids, Interstate battery, nut & bolt inspection (12/22 @ 26,984 miles)

The exterior of this GT4 is in very good condition with minimal signs of track use.  The paint is all original and verified with a paint meter.  The entire front nose, side rockers, front fenders, and leading edge of rear fenders have been protected with PPF.  There are still some small chips on the front nose and the PPF is shrinking at the edges of the headlights.  The roof has a few small chips.  The windshield has been replaced and there are no major chips or cracks.  The rest of the glass is original and wearing the proper factory stampings.  All the exterior trim and light lenses are in good shape.  The factory wheels have a few minor blemishes, but nothing significant.  They are wearing Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tires dated the end of 2021 and installed in 2022.  They have between a third and a half-life remaining.  The front brake pads have around 75% life left, while the rears are at about half-life.  There are no major lips on the rotors.

The interior is very nice and mostly original.  The factory carbon buckets are in good shape with no heavy wear on the Alcantara centers.  The bolsters are in good shape with some typical wear on the exit bolsters.  Currently, they are protected with matching leather exit bolster covers with matching deviated stitching.  A bolt-in roll/harness bar has been installed professionally and it integrates seamlessly with the stock interior and is barely noticeable.  A set of Schroth 6-point street-legal harnesses come with the car but are not installed.  They easily bolt to the seats.  The headliner is in good shape with no tears, stains, or sagging.  The carpet has no heavy wear marks with factory rubber floor mats for further protection.  The door panels are in great shape with no warping or separation issues.  The aluminum-lighted thresholds have a few small dents from the belts.  The dash has no cracks or warping.  All the gauges work properly as well as the power mirrors and windows.  The A/C system blows cold.  Since this GT4 was ordered with a radio delete, a wireless Bluetooth system has been installed by the previous owner.  It works well.  The interior lights work.

We just checked the car’s computer (DME) checking for rev ranges.  Level 1 (at redline) we showed a total of 12.74 seconds total for the total life of this car.  The last time to hit redline was nearly 2,000 miles ago.  Levels 2-4 0.06 to 0.04 to 0.09 seconds, which are all most likely a computer glitch.  The last time that might’ve happened was still over 21k miles ago.  Level 5 and 6 are zero.

This GT4 is a blast to drive.  It’s just enough analog, modern, and comfort to make it a great multi-use sportscar.  It starts easily and pulls hard throughout the rev range.  The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding or rubbing.  The clutch engages properly.  The handling is crisp and very responsive.  The brakes still have excellent bite with no fading or pulling.

California registration is paid to May of 2025 and it passes California’s strict smog test.

This GT4 comes with 2 main keys, owner’s manual, remote for stereo, Porsche indoor custom car cover, original  tool kit, the factory tire repair kit, factory air compressor, Schroth street-legal cam-lock 6 point harnesses, Track Nanny sound reduction device, original ceramic rotors with brake pads, and original front coil over springs.

* Aftermarket performance headers are available for purchase separately.

What is “analog?”

For the past decade, car enthusiasts have loved to use the word “analog” to describe some elusive automotive experience they lust after.

Personally, I think most have no idea what analog means and are just parroting what they hear from others.

Webster defines it as:

analog adjective

“of, relating to, or being a mechanism or device in which information is represented by continuously variable physical quantities”

That could mean anything.

I define analog as the pleasure/happiness one derives from operating a mechanical device.

For each Porsche sports car generation, owners often claim, “This is the LAST of the analog era.”  Is it?

Is this GT4 analog?

Hell, yeah it is!

With each driver’s input, I found myself having a blast and that’s all that matters.
