The half production year 928 for 1986 has turned out to become one of the favorites among 928 enthusiasts. It combines the best of the later S4 mechanical developments with the lighter and more elegant/simpler design of the first generation. These cars received the 5.0L/32 valve motor as did the later S4s including the larger Brembo brakes, staggered wheel sizes, ABS, S4 updated suspension package, and similar improved flow exhaust system. Basically, all the mechanicals of the S4 in a 200lb lighter body. Only 2,000 of these unique models were delivered to North America and of those, only a handful came in the manual.
This Porsche was built on May 28th, 1986 and delivered new on October 18th, 1986 by Carousel Automobiles, the local Porsche + Audi dealer of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Although these flagship cars were well equipped with many standard features, this example was ordered with the following additional options:
- US Standard Emissions
- Steering wheel w/raised hub
- Blaupunkt radio Monterey
- Higher speed engine cooling fan for hot climate
- Platinum anodized wheels
- Manual transmission
- HiFi sound system
- Amplifier system
- Alarm system
- High output air conditioner
- Electric sliding sunroof
- Dunlop tires
The MSRP was nearly $54,000, which is over $120,000 in today’s dollars.
The first owner was a Mr. Jarl M. Fechner from Edina, MN. He kept the car for about 2-years before selling it with 13,058 miles on August 8th, 1988 to a Mr. Carl J. Dyrbe of Hudson, Wisconsin. Mr. Dyrbe was looking through the Sunday classifieds of the local Star Tribune, when he stumbled across the advertisement for this 928 (see pic of original newspaper ad). He was a German ex-patriot who was a retired architect. For the next 28-years, he drove the car lightly, but regularly. It was never driven in snow or harsh weather. As a result, it remained in near perfect condition.
Both owners serviced the car regularly at their local Porsche dealers. There are corresponding service stamps in the maintenance book from new to July of 1995/30k-miles. There are a few more dealer receipts from the early 2000s including a belt service and front brakes in 2003 at 45k-miles. In September of 2015, Mr. Dyrbe decided to get ready to sell the car. So, he took it into his local Porsche specialist at 59,461 miles and had a complete inspection performed as well as spending nearly $4,000 on the following services:
- 60k Major service/tune up
- All belts including timing belt
- Spark plugs
- Water pump from Porsche
- All filters
- Oil service
- Coolant flush
- Brake fluid flush
- Transmission fluid flush
- Fuel filter
- Distributor cap and rotor
- Tension rollers
Over the years, Mr. Dyrbe had purchased parts from Mark Anderson of 928 International. They developed a friendship. So, when it came time to sell, he felt there was no better person for it then Mark. On December 9th, 2016 he sold the car to Mark with 59,664 original miles. For the last 20-months, Mark has only added another 800-miles. He has displayed it at a few shows and driven it around locally. Unfortunately, with his busy schedule, he just doesn’t have the time to enjoy the car as much as he hoped he would. We are excited to help him as it checks all the boxes: unusual color/options, great ownership history, low miles, and very original.
Last year, Mark hired Cooper Boggs of Cooper’s Classy Car Care to go through the entire car and perform a major cosmetic cleaning inside, outside, and underneath. Cooper is a well-respected local detailer who is very active in the local PCA Concours scene. He had any dents carefully removed; polished the paint; rejuvenated/cleaned the leather; hand polished the special anodized wheels; and, took care of any other details the car needed. This service was nearly $1,000. The results are amazing. This 928 looks as good as the 15k original mile one we recently sold.
It is clear that this 928 has always been well cared for, never abused, and properly serviced. It looks fantastic. I’ve never seen this color in person and it looks amazing. It was only offered by Porsche as a standard color for 1985 and 1986 model year cars. It appears to be closer to a Chiffon White shade. It has a creamy ivory hue to it with just a drop of light beige. The paint is all original and verified with a paint meter (see pics) with the slight exception of just some touch up/blending on the sunroof panel. There are minimal signs of use. All the trim and glass is original including the windshield. There are no cracks or major pits. The anodized wheels are in great shape with no significant flaws. They are wearing Pirelli PZero tires with more than 75% tread left. Although there are no cracks or signs of age, they are older tires. The brake pads have more than 75% life remaining as well.
The engine bay and chassis look equally as nice and indicative of a carefully driven and maintained low mile example. The engine looks crisp and clean. The sound pad was recently replaced. All the plastic and rubber bits show no cracks or signs of age. The chassis is dry and straight. Much of the original Cosmoline is in place as it left the factory.
The interior is also in exceptional condition. The leather seats have a supple feel to them and are not hard. There are no cracks or tears, just some minimal wear on the driver exit bolster. The headliner, carpet, and door panels all look perfect. The dash and instrument pod have no cracks or signs of warping. All the gauges operate properly. All the buttons, knobs, and other electric system function as they should. The A/C system was just serviced and charged. As a result, it blows ice cold. The original Blaupunkt radio works great too.
This 928 survivor drives fantastic. It starts easily on the first try and hold s an even idle. The power feels great with excellent torque. It easily accelerates through the rpm range. The transmission shifts smoothly with no slipping or grinding. The clutch engages perfectly. The steering is precise and the car tracks straight. The brakes have excellent initial bite with no fading or pulling.
This 928 would be the ideal vintage touring car. With all the cool car events that are far away, this would be a comfortable, fun, and cool way to get there.
This 928 comes with the original owner’s manuals including stamped maintenance book, all original extra keys, selling dealer key fob, tool kit, Certificate of Authenticity, original dealer window sticker, factory maintenance book, original newspaper advertisement, original bill of sale, space saver spare, air compressor, jack, and cargo cover.**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud.
