By the end of the 1970’s, the convertible was nearly dead in the U.S. thanks to safety advocate groups.  Richard Straman of Orange County, California started building convertibles out of luxury brands in the early 1980’s.  His shop, Richard Straman Coachworks, ended up building over 10,000 convertible conversions from 1981 to 1996.  The shop converted everything from Ferrari Testarosas to Nissan 300 ZXs.  A considerable amount of work was invested in testing the chassis and reinforcing it to provide similar structural integrity as that of a hardtop.  This attention to detail not only had the “Big 3” auto manufacturers using Straman for R&D but helped him quickly earn a reputation as the best in the industry.  He ended up producing just over 100 Mercedes conversions, which were sold new through the U.S. Mercedes Benz dealerships.

This 560 SEC was sold new on June 5th, 1986 by Jim Slemons Imports of Newport Beach, California to Mrs. Yvonne Segerstrom of Los Angeles.  It was ordered with the following factory options:

  • 286 Luggage Nets on Back of Front Seats
  • 406 Orthopedic Front Seats (Left and Right)
  • 430 Headrests in the Rear
  • 442 Airbag in Steering Wheel
  • 494 California Version
  • 519 Becker Radio Grand Prix
  • 524 Paintcoat Preservation
  • 551Anti-theft Warning System
  • 581 Automatic Climate Control
  • 597 Heat Insulating Glass
  • 873 Heated Seats

The MSRP was over $65,000.  Before delivery, this MB was delivered to Straman Coachworks in Costa Mesa, California for the convertible conversion, which added another $50k+ to the vehicle price tag.  In today’s dollars, this 560SEC would cost over $200,000 new.

Mrs. Segerstrom drove the car regularly for the first 10-years with regular services at the local Mercedes dealer (corresponding stamps in the maintenance book – see pic).  By the end of 1986, she had driven the car about 22k-miles.  For the last 23-years, the car was driven lightly and always garaged.  Finally, the family has decided it’s time for the next enthusiast to properly enjoy this Mercedes.  Upon delivery to us, we took the car to our local specialists and had them go through everything to make sure it was in good working order.  Highlights of services performed include:

  • Convertible top mechanism checked, serviced, and lubricated by AAA Sunroof
  • Oil service
  • General inspection

They found this Mercedes to be in very good condition with no signs of prior damage or significant needs.

The exterior looks to be in very good condition and evident that it was always garaged.  The paint is mostly original with minimal signs of wear.  We had a few minor nicks professionally touched up.  All the glass is original, including the windshield.  The soft top is also in great shape with no tears or major signs of wear.  The rear window is plastic and has a few light scratches, but is still clear and easy to see through.  All the trim and brightwork look indicative of a low-mile/well preserved example.  The original wheels were chromed when new at the dealer and show very little signs of wear.  They are wearing older Michelin tires that will need to be replaced soon, but have no cracks and near full tread.  This is a great indicator of the kind of care this MB received.

The interior is in equally nice shape.  The leather seats have no tears or rips and look barely used.  The headliner of the soft top is also perfect and seals nicely.  The carpet and door panels look fresh.  The dash has no cracks or warping.  All the gauges work properly.  The power right mirror, all four windows, and electric antenna all work great.  The soft top is power operated by the rear defrost switch and works great.  The A/C system has recently been serviced and blows cold.  The original Becker radio does work but sometimes makes a brief static noise when turned off.

This Mercedes drives fantastic.  It’s remarkable how well built these cars are.  It starts easily with the first twist of the key and holds a smooth idle.  It’s very quiet as it builds power.  The transmission shifts smoothly.  The brakes have a decent bite and stop straight.  With the top up, there is minimal wind noise, similar to that of a hardtop.  It’s very quiet.  Of course, with the top down, it’s a great combination of smooth luxury and open car driving.  This 560SEC would be great to use on a daily basis or even enjoy on a longer road trip…possibly driving to one of the many Radwood® car shows popping up across the country.

California registration is current and paid through June of 2019.

This 560 SEC comes with an extra master key, original owner’s manuals, tool kit, original maintenance book with vehicle data card, spare tire, tonneau cover, car cover, and jack.
