With the launch of the 3rd generation Cayman (981), Porsche realized that this potent two-seater coupe was quickly encroaching on the performance envelope of the 911. Horsepower was up to 325 and torque was at 273. This helped propel the car from 0 to 60 in only 4.1 seconds, while it sipped gas reaching 30 mpg on the open road. These last-of-the-normally-aspirated Cayman generation are quickly becoming favorites among enthusiasts. With the lovefest for the PDK at the time, few realized how the 6-speed manual paired with a NA engine would become so rare.
This example was built in April of 2013 and sold new by Porsche of San Diego, California on May 27th, 2013. It was clearly an enthusiast ordered Porsche based on the driver experienced focused options that included:
- Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) which includes a LSD
- 19” Boxster S Wheels
- Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM)
- Manual Transmission
- Bi-Xenon Headlights Including Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS)
- Bose Surround Sound System
- Sport Design Steering Wheel
- Convenience Package:
- Air Conditioning Dual Zone
- Heated Seats
- Secondary Ventilation Controls
The factory Performance Sport Exhaust (PSE) with tips and factory short shifter were dealer installed.
The first owner was a ship captain based out of Southern California. He owned this Cayman S for just over 6-years and 3,600 miles. Due to his many months at sea, he only used the car periodically. However, he still serviced it regularly at his local Porsche dealer. In September of 2019, Newport Beach Porsche purchased this 981 and put it through their Certified Pre Owned (CPO) process, which included a 100 point inspection as well as a major service. This included:
- New Pirelli PZero tires
- Oil service
- Air filter and cabin filter
- Brake fluid flush
- Spark plugs
- Full inspection
The current Orange County enthusiast purchased this Cayman S as a CPO car from Newport Beach Porsche on September 29th, 2019 with 3,583 miles. When he purchased it, he also purchased the following service and warranty packages:
- Vehicle Care Protection (2 free services remaining)**
- Windshield & Appearance Protection (good to 9/24)**
- Safeguard Extended warranty (good to 9/23 or 48k miles)**
Describing this owner as obsessive is putting it mildly. Although he’s only owned this Porsche for a bit over 2 years and has added less than 2,000 miles, he truly pampered it and spared no expense. Obviously, it was always garaged and not driven in bad weather. However, the services and money he spent maintaining and improving it were impressive. During his care, the majority of services were performed at his local Porsche dealer. These included:
- Factory short shift kit
- Alcantara shift knob (from Porsche)
- Factory rear badging to black (original chrome ones are saved)
- Rear factory trunk mat
- Front trunk under hood protector
- Complete factory Sport Exhaust system with sport button
- Porsche satin black exhaust tips
- Powdercoated factory wheels
- Oil service (08/20 @ 4,663 miles)
- Oil service, Porsche battery, and inspection (08/21 @ 5,279 miles)
- Full vehicle SunTek® PPF (Paint Protection Film) wrap in clear
- Ceramic coat entire vehicle after PPF installed
- Xpel window tint
We just performed a DME over-rev report and there are zero over-revs in ranges 2 thru 6. Over the life of this Porsche, it has averaged only 28mph.
Or course, this Cayman S is in superb condition with hardly any visible signs of use. The paint is all original and verified with a paint meter. I couldn’t even find any rock chips except for one absolutely tiny chip on the roof by the windshield that’s under the clear film. The glass is in excellent shape and all original, including the windshield. The correct factory stampings are present and there are no major chips or scratches. All the exterior lights work and show no signs of age or discoloration. The factory wheels are in great shape with no major curb rash. They are wearing Pirelli tires dated late 2018. They were installed at the selling Porsche dealer in September of 2019 and have less than 2k miles on them. They are at almost full tread life. During the CPO process, Porsche also replaced the brakes, which are at 75% life remaining or more.
The interior is equally nice and also looks new. The leather seats have no rips, tears, or excessive wear marks on the exit bolsters. The carpet, headliner, door panels, and dash look new. All the gauges and controls operate properly. The A/C blows cold. The stereo sounds great and all the interior lights work. I can’t find any fault with this Cayman’s condition. This Cayman S was never a daily driver and just used as a fun weekend toy.
It also drives like new. It starts easily, holds a smooth idle, and has immediate throttle response. The sport exhaust sounds great and has the factory console button to activate it. Everything feels new and crisp. The brakes and handling are fantastic. It stops and drives straight. The manual transmission feels tight with nice short throws thanks to the factory short shift kit. The whole car feels very balanced and composed. Normally aspirated, mid-engine manual transmission Porsches are slowly fading away. This generation Cayman could be the swan song for that dying breed.
California registration paid through May of 2022 and it passes our state’s strict smog test
This Porsche comes with and 2 main keys in body color, all owner’s manuals with vinyl cover, original maintenance book, floor mats, recent service history, original chrome badging, original shift knob with leather boot, original shifter mechanism, Porsche leather keyfobs (2), indoor car cover, factory tire repair kit, and factory tool kit.
*Available for an extra fee is the stock exhaust system.
**Warranties and services are possibly transferable. The warranty and service contracts were sold by an AutoNation Porsche dealer. It is unclear if they are only good through an AutoNation Porsche dealer or others. The contract information is available upon request for the buyer to confirm on their own. This is an extra that we did not include in pricing the vehicle and if it is not available in your area, it will not result in a reduction of price.
***Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.
“This is the end my beautiful friend.” -The Doors
As I was rhythmically shifting between gears and blipping the throttle of this 6-speed manual Cayman S, I kept hearing the repeating chorus of the song, The End. I glanced down at the radio. It was off.
I fiddled around with the “sport” and “sport exhaust” buttons. It definitely sounds better with the sport exhaust activated, but I still couldn’t get that looping verse out of my head.
Rhetorically, I kept asking myself, “How many more cars would Porsche build like this?”
I felt verklempt as the reality of this thought sank in. Decades from now, will I care that this era of real driving is over, or will I consider these times barbaric like having to roll up windows or drive cars without A/C?
“This is the end my only friend, the end.”
